Six months ago, when you could still go near the water without fear of major shrinkage, I felt the urge to give Dragon Boating a go.
It seemed like a good idea – paddling away and getting up close and personal with the super craft that graced the Viaduct in these summer months.
Following the follies of the night’s training, (and, dare I say it, occasionally beforehand) the crew would often head down to Portside Bar & Brasserie for a swift pint.
The Emirates Team NZ crew would often be down there (I hope this wasn’t why our last challenge sunk), and the place had a relaxing feel about it.
Half a year later, my partner and I decided to pay Portside a visit—my, how things had changed.
A few brave souls were stationed out the front and a further ten or so inside having a Friday after-work drink to round out their week.
Waiting at a fairly deserted bar, my presence wasn’t acknowledged by either of the bar staff for a good couple of minutes which is poor service in my opinion; particularly as they weren't run off their feet.
Having taken possession of a much needed Amstel and wine … we took a seat with a view out to Graham Harts’ Ulysses, which dwarfed other vessels moored nearby.
There’s not a lot visually stimulating inside—perhaps with the exception of some well portioned plates of seafood making their way to diners.
In retrospect, I failed to see what was appealing about Portside Bar & Brasserie the first time round—maybe the clientele; perhaps the fact that a pint was particularly well deserved after training; or, more likely, the fact that you could sit outside and enjoy summer?
You’re not spoilt for choice on this side of the Viaduct, but then again a little walk will do you no harm.
