Ponsonby Cafes - The Best

Ponsonby Cafes - The Best

Wellington may claim to be New Zealand's cafe capital but there's little doubt that New Zealanders love affair with coffee had it's origins in and around Ponsonby Road. Often the butt of non-Aucklanders jokes, the Ponsonby faithful did little to (discourage) the notion that Aucklanders were pre-occupied with three things; money, self-image and latte.

As diverse as it is large, there's enough Ponsonby cafe options for any time, taste or occasion. Here's a few tried and true Ponsonby cafe options to get you started.

Coffee Supreme

You'd be hard-pressed to find a cafe that treats its beans and milk as well as Coffee Supreme (formerly Good One) does. It's Douglas Street location also tends to put off the 'look at me' set. Nice.

Bambina

With its unassuming and not too-try-hard vibe, Bambina churns out its brunch dishes with flourish every single time and never rudely surprises us with inconsistencies in their food or service, which deserves serious kudos in our books. The popularity of Bambina is undeniable, and for good reason.

Dizengoff

In the restaurant game, popularity can make busy places sometimes drop the ball, but Dizengoff is still consistently one of the best places for coffee, brunch or lunch along Ponsonby Rd.

One 2 One

Unlike the overbearingly pompous vibe that the shops along the Ponsonby strip sometimes emit, One 2 One Cafe retains a welcoming and imtimate, homely atmosphere and always has a smile (and a yum ginger slice) for all that stop by. One of Ponsonby's few kiddie-friendly options.

Landreth & Co

With exotics such as their infamous Waikanae Crab Omelette and the Scandinavian Smörgåstårta - or Sandwich Cake - amongst their brunch menu, it's no surprise that this Ponsonby Cafe has a huge following and has become a Ponsonby Road institution. Landreth & Co is small so don't go organising a catch-up with your fellow soccer-mums.
