reading your Pintxos review reminded me of a recent experience I had at this Ponsonby bar and I agree - it is a little gem.
Pintxos is absolutely tiny and I'd describe service as organised-chaos which is actually quite fun! The wine list is international and the notion that you can pick and choose what you want as it takes your fancy (at a very nominal price) is something that I'd be keen to see at other eateries.
Well worth a visit and look forward to my next Pintxos experience.

Great bar, terrible venue

Don't hold your party here – so many promises, so little delivery.

Told us they could lower the bright overhead lighting in the courtyard, which is why we booked it – let us know on the day of the party that wouldn’t be happening. Told us there would be lots of outdoor heaters – ran out of gas in all but one, on the coldest night of the year, and didn’t replace the bottles. But the thing that had really sold this venue to us is we were told us on two occasions (we doublechecked) that we could have it till 5am because of their late license – then the staff shut down a well-behaved party with lines at the bar two hours early, with no reason given.

Making promises you can’t deliver on is so much worse than just saying ‘we can’t do that’ so people can just go ‘cool’ and make other arrangements. We’ve held our joint birthday party for years at bars around the city and they’ve all been great – we always have meetings with the staff beforehand, as we did this time, and get what we agreed on, no trouble.

On every other occasion managers have thanked us at the (stipulated) end for the great atmosphere and revenue we've brought to their venue, with one being so stoked she gave us a bottle of Moet. But Pintxos just took thousands of dollars, then kicked us out, freezing.

Great little spot tucked away down Mackelvie St. Awesome little Spanish tapas you just help yourself to and pay at the end. Great wine and great service. We go here a lot.

I've never been so disappointed. On reading the article in the VIVA earlier this year I was very excited to visit as I love Tapass. Pintxos boasted Basque-style tapas. So on Saturday 4 of my friends and myself visited there.

To start with - the decor. We went through to what looked like a more comfortable parlour room as one of my friends was not a bar stool fan. It also had been raining outside so not desirable to anyone. I thought it was quaint, much like Grandma's lounge with the furniture, tasseled lampshades, red curtains and floral wall coverings. However my other friend, a big guy felt the chairs tiny and he felt claustrophobic.

Everything was cold and seemed to be made either the night before or that morning. Everything was on cheap french stick, so too bad if you are someone like me and tries to stay away from bread.

The white anchovies was the only really special thing. And there wasn't a full cabinet or a great selection.

What I did like was the trust system of paying by saving up your skewers. I also think the staff were good and offered good service and nice wine. I've been once - won't go again. I think there are way better Tapa restaurant/bars out there.
