Petit Bocal, Sandringham - Cafe Review

Petit Bocal (French for Small Jar) has a fantastic ‘spoilt for choice’ menu throughout the day. We went for brunch and chose the Bruschetta and the ‘Gluten Free’. The bruschetta was stunning, a fresh ix of avocado, red onion, tomato and basil, with some of the best bacon I’ve had in a long time and two perfectly poached eggs… AND toasted ciabatta. The flavours were so good, and portion sizes were extremely generous - a steal for $18. It’s nice to have a cafe that isn’t stingy when it comes to dishes like this. The Gluten Free was a similar dish, bacon, spinach and poached eggs served on potato with citrus hollandaise. This got a big thumbs up, though perhaps needed a touch more seasoning. A second visit is definitely on the cards to try out their lunch and evening menus (the Picky Lunch sounds lovely, as do the evening platters which come with a freshly baked baguette).

They do a good flat white here… possibly slightly overdone, but not a biggie. There’s a good mix of NZ and French wines on the wine list, and a couple of great Super Juice options.

Light and bright, the room is decorated with white tiles, black and white photos of Paris and lightbulbs strung in glass jars. We love the retro seating and wooden tables. Best seat in the house is tucked into one of the window seats on each side of the door.

Some of the nicest we’ve experienced in Auckland cafes. Exceedingly polite and very French!

The generous portions - the bruschetta especially.

Bottom Line

There is a lot to love about Petit Bocal. Good value, great service and lovely bright surroundings make this a very special cafe. You must go.
