Located in the heart of the Mairangi Bay shops, Paper Moon Café/Bar has really got the market cornered. In my opinion, it’s really the pick of a small bunch in that area, and it's by far the busiest.
Paper Moon is very busy and somewhere you might want to consider booking if you’re planning on visiting in the weekend. There’s no real bar area as such, so if you only want a drink you may be seated amongst the tables of diners.
There’s a good outdoor area, perfect for enjoying alfresco dining and enjoying a wine on a warm evening; lots of inside seating; and a smaller room (comfortably seating 24) at the rear. The back room is more luxurious than the front, with tan leather seats lining the walls, and maroon drapes and lamps providing a certain warmth.
The wine list isn’t terribly innovative or inviting, but includes a solid mix of Kiwi and Aussie labels. The Black Estate cabernet sauvignon at $9 a glass went down very well and they have the usual variety of bottled beers—Heineken, Corona and Macs.
The staff are friendly, and very young; the clientele, well, polar opposites really. I wasn’t too sure if they were locals or parents of staff members looking for discounts.
If you’re in the area, I'd recommend popping into the Paper Moon Café/Bar, but don’t expect to be overawed. The alternatives are limited and this one is arguably the pick of the bunch if visitor numbers are anything to go by.
