Had a wonderful night at Ostro with two of my friends. We were all looking forward to Ostro and it did not disappoint!

I booked a table three weeks ahead to make sure we could actually get a table and asked if we could be seated by one of the windows, because Ostro has stunning harbour views. I recommend booking this early just for this reason!

All three of us agreed to order a main dish each and then share two desserts, as the meals are quite pricey. Entrées start at $16, while main dishes range between $29 to $90!

My dish of Seared Yellowfin Tuna with garden peas, wasabi mayonnaise, karengo (like seaweed) and pea shoots ($16) was fresh, delicious and I would happily order it again. My friends ordered the Roast Scampi Risotto with Marlborough saffron and parmesan ($29) and the Ricotta & Spinach Tortelli with tomato, basil and parmesan ($29) both of which were tasty.

For dessert, we ordered the Violet Chocolate Fondant with salted caramel ice cream and the Bombe Alaska - both were great, but the fondant definitely hit the spot!

I thought the service was great. Our waiter was very chatty and attentive. He kept our water glasses full and asked how our meals were throughout the evening.

What a fantastic night - I cannot wait to go back!

We attended Ostro as part of the Auckland Restaurant Month back in August and had a really enjoyable evening. I started with the Calamari and Squid Ink Risotto and it was absolutely amazing, rich, buttery and everything you want in a Risotto, the calamari was tender and cooked beautifully. For main I had the Slow roasted pork belly and it was cooked to perfection, I was not disappointed with this main. For dessert I had the Bombe Alaska which is an old favourite of mine and it was a real treat, great and new flavours.
I really enjoyed Ostro and I would struggle to fault it.

Seriously good location & amazing views!
We found the service pretty good - minor hiccup around the timing of the delivery of a wine order, but that was ok.
Food was pretty amazing - Dinner companion had the pork chop - it was the standout on our table, very impressive. Everything else was pretty nice as well. Will definitely return.

Ostro, where do I begin.....The location is great, the views wonderful and as we sat at the largest terrace table we had front row seats to a working wharf that at the time was off loading hundreds of new cards, however.....

A bad start to service was not having water at our table for 30 mins and we had to physically go into the restaurant in search of some service to order our drinks. Then another long wait for them to arrive and a few of our 11 never received their drinks so we had to ask again. This put a dampener on the evening, not to mention the inexperienced incompetent young staff.

The head waiter was rude when I explained to him our problem he snapped that they were busy. Your not kidding, its Christmas, so you get more staff and experienced ones. He went off and got the Matre'd who was sympathetic and tried to appease us with 2 bottles of bubbles. However a little too late. We noticed there were other tables with empty glasses and some unhappy patrons that were also chasing down waiters.

The set menu, printed on one side with a maritime chart, is a reminder of the original use of the space.

To start we had stecca bread served warm with butter flecked with seaweed and whipped until it's so soft it practically spreads itself.
I had the Kingfish Crudo which was light and fresh and even my friend who is not into raw fish so much loved it. For my main I had the honey glazed grilled Poussin with Harissa and blackened tomatoes which was lovely.

For dessert as I always choose Pannacotta or all things chocolate (which was the offerings on the set menu) so I chose the cheeseboard which was great. 3 cheeses, fruit chutney and yummy warm fruit bread. A generous portion too.

All I can finish with is that I will not be revisiting until I hear that the service has improved. Josh shouldn't rest on his lorels of good food or his TV fame. The service is equally important and can be the thing to kill the night no matter how good the food.

An exciting addition to the selection of vibrant new bars and restaurants in Auckland. At the top of stairs we were greeted by a photograph of the iconic seafarer who lived in the building for more than ten years. Walking through the door, we were struck by the buzz in the large open space, belying that Ostro has just opened its door.

While some staff are still are settling in the routine of a busy brasserie, they were attentive to our needs, including keeping our glasses topped up.

Preferring a lighter meal, we opted for the seafood appetisers and were impressed by the presentation as well as the composition of the dishes.

Josh Emmett provided welcome guidance on the delicious selection of desserts. All the options impressed with distinct flavours, colours and textures.

This place is a complete winner in our books. We will be back.
