Ortolana, Britomart - Restaurant Review

The Hip Group invasion of Britomart continues…

Food

To share or not to share? The vagueness of the menu means that you can’t really tell what’s big and what’s small. There are some obvious main dishes (Rib eye bistecca, Market fish etc.), but the rest are best shared or perhaps sufficient for a light meal. We went down the shared route, the highlight of our 5 plates being the soft folded egg with house smoked mackerel & sorrel. A sort-of kedgeree, this was a delight. Other favourites included an air-dried pork and mustard leaf piadina (think quesadilla) and mozzarella burrata with some delicious burnt figs to accompany (not one to be ordered as a solo dish as it’s on the small side). The food is refreshingly different in concept and flavour from much of what’s available in bistros around Auckland, and mostly sourced from their farm in Kumeu. For that Ortolana deserves much praise.

Drinks

A concise beer list including Hallertau & Peroni. Their smoothies sound intriguing (Black Doris Plum & Pear, or Almond, Blueberry & Bee Pollen).

Vibe

We went for a late Saturday lunch and the place was humming. It’s actually quite small inside, but the layout gives the space a bright and airy feel. The open kitchen is a great idea. We liked the outdoor seating, especially as they haven’t crammed the space with too many tables and chairs. Any bistro that has Aesop soap in the bathrooms surely must get an extra tick.

Service

Fast and efficient. I’ll write off their vague knowledge of what constituted brunch, shared plates or mains on the menu as a small first week stumble, but given that the menu doesn’t have headings, having staff that can give guidance is important.

Highlights

The fit-out is wonderful, somewhere between a church and a retro ski chalet. Be sure to check out the crazy globe arrangement above your head.

The Bottom Line

If they’re this good one week in, I can’t wait to see what they’re like when they hit their stride. Beautiful food & beautiful design. Recommended.
