Ortolana has been opened for some time now and although I eat out regularly its one place I still hadn’t been to. My significant birthday came up so I told my friends I wanted to go there. The food here is simply bursting with the fullness of life. The word "ortolana" comes from the Italian word for "market gardener" and the chef here takes this to heart with the exceptional menu which takes full advantage of produce from the Kumeu farm and artisan growers. It's in the heart of Britomart and you can sit outside beneath a glittering canopy of lights which I had done in the past with my takeaway Milse Dessert. The wine list is equally as exciting, as no one "owns" Ortolana's list so I enjoyed some lovely Chianti. The lamb shoulder was soft and crisped and perfect on all accounts.Sides were of lively garden produce, minimally fussed with, complemented by splashes of oil or sprinkles of fresh herbs. As dessert comes from Milse anyway but I had always wanted to dine in there and watch the Chefs, we managed to get a table as it was so late and skipped dessert in actual Ortolana.Ortolana makes me feel proud of our city's level of cuisine and professionalism. Eat anything here because it's all good. I would have loved to try the crayfish Ravioli my friend had as that looked great.

I’ve reviewed the food at Ortolana on several occasions and it is an eatery that I have recommended to friends because of both the exceptional food and lively atmosphere. Ortolana puts a heavy emphasis on fresh produce (most from their own farm) and incorporates plenty of healthy ingredients into their dishes. For more details on the food, please check out my post here

I needed the menu translated as there were a number of items which were a mystery to me. Once the waitress had explained however I realised I couldn't really go wrong, whatever I ordered. Lovely food and coffee and while it may feel strange ordering pasta for breakfast, it makes a lovely alternative to toast!

The owners of Ortolana have done a very good job with the premises. I loved every aspect of the decor and setting at Ortolana. Bright, warm, and comfortable with a garden and dreamy fairy lights. Ambiance was buzzing without being too overwhelming.

Ortolana does not take bookings. The wait list can be long, but waiting for a table was alright as there are plenty of watering holes nearby to pass time at. We received a phone call 25mins later for our table, but decide to take a table later to enjoy our drinks as had expected to wait up to 45mins anyway.

Service was Ortolana was good. Staff were very friendly. Although, I think improvements can be made on food descriptions. Staff were very willing to receive feedback on their food without making me feel like a whinger, though. So thumbs up for that!

The food at Ortolana was a bit of a hit and miss for me. Some flavours just did not seem to go well together. Food is based on seasonal availability. Currently it's all very fresh produce driven. I think they definitely love their microherbs as everything was peppered with them. Overall, the food is well-presented and menu is simple with a wide variety.

There's a good variety of drinks available. We tried their fresh fruit sodas. The watermelon soda had a funny after-taste, but the passionfruit soda was very good.

A dessert bar (Milse) to compliment Ortolana is to be opened very soon next door. I had a sneak preview of the premises and am definitely liking what I saw, especially their freezer full of gelato on stick (available as a dessert).

On the whole, I love Ortolana for its atmosphere. The food, I personally will have to pick wisely for it to meet my personal preference. But if you're looking for very fresh produce driven food, then Ortolana is the place for you.

Tips:
- For privacy, avoid the long table inside.
- Arrive before 6pm for dinner to avoid waiting for a table
