Mount Eden Village has been my local haunt for coffee and catch ups for several years. Whilst there is no shortage of cafes, I was delighted when Olaf's opened to inject some much needed change to other enjoyable but 'tired' offerings.
Olaf's provides an interesting selection of high quality artisan like food. The cabinet offerings are divine and the fresh bread beautifully crafted. Whilst serving sizes are small, the food is beautifully prepared/presented.
The ambiance and decor of the cafe is indulgent but comfortable. Of particular interest is the glass screen which allows you to look into the kitchen as staff prepare your meals.
Though I have often enjoyed breakfast or multiple morning/afternoon tea catch ups with friends I lament that Olaf's has such early closing hours as I am sure that they could benefit from the business of Mount Eden on many an evening. Furthermore the staff could do with some further customer service training as the level of attentiveness/friendliness has sometimes been inconsistent and leaves much more to be desired. This has been particularly noticeable when families with children are present.
We had a voucher from grabone which is why we visited Olaf's Artisan Bakery & Cafe. We went on a rainy Sunday and it was very busy. The meals took a while to come but we were warned of this before ordering. We were very happy with both of our meals. I had the french toast without bacon and my husband had the eggs bene. I also had a hot choc which was fantastic. We took home some tarts which were also pretty good. I would go back again if in the area.
Great food, pity they were so unfriendly when we turned up as a family. It's a cafe not a high brow restaurant. The owner no less, came to our table and told us no uncertain terms that our children were not welcome.
What made matters worse is he told us this AFTER we'd placed our orders and paid.
Olaf's Artisan Balery is NOT a family friendly place.
