Nuffield Street Cafe, Newmarket - Cafe Review

Once one of Auckland's go-to entertainment precincts, Newmarket has been overshadowed by some newer upstarts of late. Could this Nuffield Street Cafe be central to the precinct's revival?

Food

For a whole host of reasons, exceptional. One of the most extensive menus going around. Infact, although it alludes to it in the title, it's probably not fair to deem Nuffield Street as a cafe only - it's so much more than that. The lunch menu is certainly varied with some great blackboard specials, salad options and more significant savoury options. The char-grilled chicken salad with chorizo, although not plentiful, proved a wise selection. The accompanying corn salsa providing just the right balance this dish needed. There was a hint of food envy as my dining companion devoured his chicken burger though - a tempting reason to get off the health kick.

Drinks

Although a Mocha was the order of the day, I did notice the large wine list and were impressed by a few of the beer choices available. Epic, Kronenbourg and Boundary Road are certainly going to sway me to make a return visit.

Vibe

Although a late lunch (2.30ish), the vibe was actually really good. The decor and surroundings really help with this. Fresh, contemporary finishes, informal and friendly service and generous space between tables serve to create just the right environment.

Service

As mentioned above, the service was very good. My dining companion had brought his four year old and although indecisive, we never felt that we were rushed to make a decision. Water was frequently topped up as well (unless that was a subtle hint to hurry up and order!) - I think not!

Highlights

The whole combination - service, setting and food. A complete offering from start to finish.

The Bottom Line

Nuffield Street Cafe is one of Newmarket's leading lights and should be sought out irrespective if you're in the area on a pre-determined retail splurge. A cafe to be commended.
