Newmarket Restaurants

Despite being the central Auckland shopping haven and weekend destination, Newmarket has a sorely sour reputation for being a bit of a culinary wasteland which really does make finding a pre or post-shopping nibble a bit of a fruitless manhunt. However, Newmarket restaurants have recently been upping their game, with many note-worthy restaurants and cafes popping up all around Newmarket. We here at ViewAuckland.co.nz have devised a go-to guide to the best Newmarket restaurants, guaranteeing you a fail-proof gastronomic experience to go with those new pair of shoes you've just picked up!

Basque Kitchen & Bar
(Spanish, Tapas)
With the whole tapas and communal dining trend being on the rise nowadays, the entry of Basque Kitchen & Bar into the Newmarket restaurant scene couldn't be more well-timed. As Metro Magazine Top 50 Restaurant Awards 2011's Best New Restaurant finalist and Best Short Wine List winner, Basque Kitchen & Bar definitely deserves to be noticed. Most well known for its seafood-themed tapas and - needless to say - commendable wine selection, we'd say that this Newmarket restaurant is perfect for both pre-dinner drinks or dinner itself.

Hansan Vietnamese Restaurant Newmarket
(Vietnamese)
Hansan Vietnamese Restaurant is a bit of a hidden gem huddled on the far end of Nuffield Street, Newmarket, Auckland. Don't think you'd be able to saunter in on any given night and have half the restaurant to yourself, though, because word about this family-owned Veitnamese restaurant had been spreading like wildfire as is evident from the waiting line that forms in the restaurant during dinnertime - and yes, even on weekdays. But it isn't usually too long a wait, and it's a wait well worth it with the authentic pho and lemongrass beef dishes that they plate up.

Little & Friday Newmarket
(Cafe)
The long-awaited central Auckland branch of the much-loved Little & Friday in Takapuna is finally here in Newmarket - we couldn't be happier about the addition of what we consider one of Takapuna's greatest cafe asset to the repertoire of eateries in Newmarket! No longer do we have an excuse to gripe about the lack of decent cabinet food here in Newmarket cafes with Little & Friday quiches, pies, lamingtons AND lemon tarts to keep us company, amongst many more.

Mac's Brewbar Nuffield Street Trading Company
(Gastro Pub Food, Pub Food)
An institution in itself, you couldn't possibly go wrong with Mac's Brewbar Nuffield Street Trading Company as your Newmarket dining stop. Mac's Brewbar on Nuffield Street is a fool-proof choice, especially for those who are out in big groups. The casual atmosphere is perfect for unwinding after a day of fun out in Newmarket, whether with a couple of beers, a bottle of Mac's famous apple cider or even a couple of hearty pizzas to go with.

Market Kitchen and Bar
(Bistro, French, Italian, Mediterranean)
Market Kitchen and Bar is our pick as the prime Newmarket anchor bistro dining spot. They've got the usual lunch favourites such as sweetbreads, couscous salads or chicken schnitzels to satisfy the comfort foodie in you, or $12 lunch specials if you're feeling particular spend-conscious after having spent on one too many apparel purchases here in Newmarket. This restaurant also is prime destination for a cheeseboard to go with a couple glasses of wine as a well deserved treat after a day of stalking the streets of Newmarket.

Nuffield Street Cafe,Bar and Bistro (Formally Kuzhina Cafe)
(Bistro, Cafe, Modern European)
It a rare sight to see an award winning chef helming the kitchen of a cafe, so the recent appointment of Kasiano Tagaio, New Zealand Culinary Fare Gold Medal Winner as head chef at Kuzhina Cafe makes this Newmarket local noteworthy in itself. But pseudo-celebrity chefs aside, Kuzhina Cafe lands a spot on our recommended Newmarket restaurants list because, not only open from morning into the night; Kuzhina Cafe also has menus fit for all appetites or occasions. Think not only full breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, but also a dedicated dessert menu, a grazing menu and even a kids menu.

Selera Malaysian Cafe
(Asian, Malaysian)
The existence of Selera Malaysian Cafe in Newmarket, Auckland is more than enough to fulfil the quota of ethnic restaurants in Newmarket and make up for the lack of them in the shopping district; we may have a worryingly low number of ethnic restaurants in Newmarket, but at least the ones we have (such as Selera) are up to scratch. Selera Malaysian Cafe is our personal go-to whenever we've got a hankering for a carb-filled or curry themed dish during one of our shopping binges right here in Newmarket.

The Teed St Larder
(Cafe)
Teed St Larder was one of the forefront players in the gradual revitalisation of the Newmarket dining scene when it first opened its doors back in 2009. Newmarket had been begging for a revamp in the cafe arena, so the addition of Teed St Larder into the Newmarket restaurant equation had been long overdue. Teed St Larder is living up to and beyond expectations, serving up their signature Valrhona chocolate pancakes to those unable to resist its call, and some of the most delicious house made tarts you'll find in Newmarket (or even Auckland, for that matter).

Whether it's just for a warming mug of latte or a full-on eggy brunch meal, come on in to Newmarket's Teed St Larder, grab a magazine from that impossible array of that they've got and watch the world go by on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Wise Cicada
(Cafe, Vegan, Vegetarian)
To all the vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free Auckland residents out there - this one's for you. The Wise Cicada Cafe opened in Newmarket in 2010 with a unique 'gift economy' concept, meaning that diners are free to pay whatever they feel the food at Wise Cicada is worth. Before you rule this out as a gimmicky restaurant, at least give Wise Cicada a shot. From coconut macaroons to some seriously hearty vegan curries, Wise Cicada's refreshingly holistic approach and grub make it an absolute gem to be stumbling upon in the commercialised Newmarket district.
