Muddy Waters has been our local for the last twelve months. The restaurant provides consistently good pub nosh with a few up market specials with prices I would consider average. The portions are generous and we have yet to be disappointed with a meal - which is more than we can say for some other more expensive and well known Auckland waterfront restaurants! The bar food menu is also good. Lots of choices and large portions, making it great for sharing.
There has been quite a bit of staff turnover and some of the staff are relatively inexperienced. However, this has never ruined our evening - in fact a couple of times, a waitress's inexperience has led to a good few chuckles and a bit of light entertainment! The owners and staff are hardworking, friendly and keen to please.
The bar can get too noisy and crowded for my liking when there is a Karaoke night or live band. However, the restaurant is well insulated from the noise in the bar - unless both doors between the restaurant and bar happen to open at the same time!
We often take friends and relatives to Muddy Waters when they come visiting. They have all been pleasantly surprised at what a good night out can be had in little old Mercer - thanks to Muddy Waters! Keep up the good work guys!
I am surprised at the other comments.. I have been a regular dinner at the muddy for some years and have seen a lot of changes and yes ...a change of chef can make a big difference recently in May there was a complete change in all staff and I must say it has gone from strength to strength. I was actually dinning on the night in question that the review was written below and I can only say that in my years of travelling and dinning around the world ..Duck is never served cooked !! Gordon Ramsey would have a fit ..as to the prices there is ample on the menu that is very reasonably price and a good and varied selection ..I was even lucky enough to catch their French theme night on my way to the Airport and was very impressed by the dishes authenticity and the service.. the music and french chef and waiter added a great ambiance.. There is still a little to do the men's toilets need a refurb with a new larger sink perhaps ..Again I did notice the floors had had a bit of a make over..I would like to see the foyer and front plant pots used to their full advantage.. but i was there on Monday evening and had the salmon special with saffron sauce ..it was awesome .... Lastly sounds like a few locals need to get out more..
Keep it up Muddy !!
I went to the Muddy Farmer about 8 months ago for dinner and wasn't that impressed with the service or the food.
However a friend of mine convinced me to go back there for dinner again last week and I must say the food and service was 100% better. I was told it was under new management and that there had been some staff changes, which I can say have done it a world of good. It was a bit on the quiet side which was the only down.
So if your looking for a place to go for a drink after work and a bit I food I would say give it a go. Well done on the improvements.
We have eaten at Muddy Waters Restaurant on a number of occassions and had really great meals. About three months ago the chef changed. When we spoke to our waiter on this day he said that the chef was putting together his own menu, great we thought. A month later we visited the restaurant again, still to see the same menu. Our waitress on this evening told us the same story we had heard from the waiter the previous month. So we waited another four weeks and last night returned to the restuarant. I asked our waitress (the same one we had seen on our last visit) where the new menu was? Her reply "we are still waiting for it to be finished and typed".
The prices are similar to those you would pay in any upmarket restaurant. We are happy to pay for good food, but this chef is not particularly versed in the art of cooking duck or venison well (both these meals are priced between $30 and $38 for a main).
Whilst we were dining another couple arrived and after seeing the menu and complaining about the prices had a glass of wine and left.
We are local to the area, so find this really sad. We feel we have given you enough chances (three) over the last three months. Come on Muddy Waters what's happened to your standards.
