Montrose is my favourite cafe and bar of all time. I have been here around 100 times during my time living on the shore.First, I love the staff - while I lived on the shore they become like family to me. I enjoyed their friendly, helpful yet still very professional service.Second, the food - is to die for. I have ordered steak, lamb shanks, fries, salads, omelettes, cakes, coffees... actually most of the menu, it is served perfectly every time. I often ask for extra sauce, but that is more about my preference, than a lack of what is served. I am gluten free, and their menu gives me a lot of tasty options.Third, the drinks - coffee from here is the best I have ever tasted. I know that Bruce spends a lot of money on the beans and prep. I normally don't like coffee - but I do from here. The Guinness from here is also the best I have ever tasted. Finally, the atmosphere is stylish, yet intimate. This isn't a noisy cafe - you can have a conversation here, the music is modern and upbeat - and they have a good selection. If you are looking to have a high tea, dinner, get-together or meal out I highly recommend you visit Montrose. I spent a lot of time on the North Shore - and despite having a lot of options in Mairangi Bay, including Papermoon - I CHOOSE to go here instead.I recommend Montrose very highly.David Buckingham(PS. I did not get paid to write this review - I just really enjoyed my time here)

Montrose are incredibly passionate about Gluten Free catering and have an endless list of options available. If you fall into this category my advice would be make this restaurant top of your to eat list.
We went for high tea here and got plenty of attention sitting outside with our tiers and there is plenty of foot traffic so this is a great positive for the restaurant and if they can sit everyone outside they may get a bit of business from this.
On first look you notice the plates and cups are a little old and scratched and could do with a bit of a spruce up but it is mainly about the food. The layout of this high tea was a little different with the noticeable difference being no scone plate.
The top tier was the sweets (including scones), then it was sandwiches and finally some savouries. Starting with the overall look, I’ve mentioned the plates and the only other issue we seemed to have was the savouries plate looked a little sparse heightened by the fact there was a little piece of parsley sitting in the middle of the plate which looked limp and old. However that’s pretty much it for the negatives and they are just minor.
There was a great effort to accommodate our request for a vegetarian high tea and it’s clear that Montrose really look after dietary needs. Often vegetarian high teas are just bits of tomato or avocado and that’s your lot! The Savouries themselves were fine, two quiches, two frittata and two savoury muffins that went down well. The sandwiches were a similar story and were suffice for a vegetarian high tea.
The highlight was the sweet tier. It consisted of mini scones, a hot sticky date pudding with caramel sauce, chocolate cupcakes, a passionfruit meringue, carrot cake and butterscotch brownie. I was a little surprised that the only scones you got was a half of a tiny one. The rest of the plate was excellent. The standout was the butterscotch brownie, so good in fact we went back on another day to pick up a slice.
