The ViewAuckland Review
I'm warning you now - this isn't going to be a very long review as Mission Bay Cafe is one of the places that you go to that doesn't really stick in your memory. It's vanilla... or New Plymouth. There's nothing that special about it, but it doesn't grate. It's just... ok.
Not that that is a bad thing - there's always a place for middle-of-the-road on a lazy Sunday when all you want is to walk in off the street and get a table. We certainly got one quickly at Mission Bay Cafe on a weekend when all we wanted was a good breakfast with quick service.
The Lazy Sunday menu choices for us consisted of eggs benedict (with a side of hash) and breakfast bruschetta. These came out very quickly which was a nice surprise as the place was quite busy when we arrived. The eggs were lovely, the hollandaise sauce being particularly nice if you like it buttery. It was one of those sauces that you just wanted to eat by the spoonful, though some people may like it milder. The hash potato was a bit odd in that it came out in a semi-tower and didn't taste that exciting. Wouldn't pick it again.
The bruschetta was OK, but you really had to work to put all the elements together on your fork, otherwise you just got ciabatta and tomato and that was it. The tomato came in slices, where it should really have been chopped up. The scrambled eggs on top were well seasoned but more like an omelette so were quite dry.
The coffee was Toasted Espresso and was quite nice, though was $4 for a single shot flat white. Double shots cost $4.50, despite being the standard in other cafes. If other smaller cafes can have this price, I can't see why somewhere like Mission Bay Cafe can't do the same, especially as they seem busy.
To be fair, Mission Bay Cafe is more of a two-and-a-half than three stars, but If you're definitely stopping in Mission Bay and not carrying onto Kohi, then you'll come out reasonably satisfied. Me, I think I would still be itching to drive on a bit further.
A Flat White costs: $4.50 (double)
Must Try: the buttery Hollandaise – lovely
