I’ve often walked straight past the door of Mezze Bar when shopping in Little High Street, and made a mental note to pay it a visit.

From the outside, Mezze Bar is not that inviting. Upstairs and off the street, you can’t see inside without entering the premises.

And that’s a shame, because once inside you find yourself in a cosy, funky and chic space. There is comfy couch seating, and loads of tables to choose from—some with a view onto Queen or Little High Street. The atmosphere is chilled and the subdued candle lit tables give the place a warm glow.

We visited Mezze Bar post-show, on a recommendation from one of the girls who had been there for brunch. Not knowing what it would be like in the evening, we were pleased with the choice.

The crowd was a mixture of after-work people who had stayed on for a meal and the after-theatre crowd. No particular age—although there were a few arty looking individuals and certainly no loud obnoxious types.

We shared about six dishes; all of which were excellent and the portions a good size. The food is a mixture of Spanish tapas with a hint of Moroccan and Pacific Rim. The wine list is abstract and not too expensive. Schubert sauvignon at $8.50 a glass and Codice Tempranillo (red) at $9 were both a good choice.

The only downside at Mezze is the lack of table service, which means heading to the counter and eyeballing the blackboard to make your selection. This is a pain when you have to make a group decision and don’t want to abandon your table en-mass.

It is fair to say the entire group left satisfied—no mean feat it must be said, and for that, Mezze Bar should be commended.
