Great setting (on a sunny day), attentive staff and delicious food...my only problem with Mexico Takapuna are the portion sizes...absolutely meagre.
Caught up with a mate over lunch the other day and thought I'd get the fried chicken.. four small tenders arrived...all for the princely sum of $12! Ok - so they were tasty but for $12, c'mon! Had to order a soft-shell taco just to keep from falling over.
Like I said - flavours are good but if you're hungry, it's going to take a decent amount of ordering to get you satisfied.
Been here twice, first time was really good (although it was extremely busy, the service was fast and the food very enjoyable). Especially recommend the quesadillas and the beetroot dip.
The second time was disappointing - not very busy but service was appalling slow. Also the food was only average - the food lacking in the fresh flavours of the first time. We also had Churros which were too oily tasting for my liking (it's a dessert but you it tasted a bit like old fish & chip shop oil).
I've now been to Mexico in Takapuna four times in the last 2 or so months and I've been consistently pleased with the overall experience so compelled to write this review.
Although swift, the service is friendly (and VERY attractive) - this all adds to the appeal of Mexico.
Most recently I had the beetroot salad as well as the chicken - the right combination of flavours and heat in my opinion. Having Mexican beer (Dos Equis etc) on the menu also adds to this restaurants authenticity.
Mexican must have been the cuisine of the year in Auckland - and Mexico is leading the charge.
The tequila was aplenty, customer service extremely lacking.
Having arrived for lunch at 1 pm, I was told a table would be available in 5 minutes, my friend and I sat waiting for 15 minutes before I saw the maitre d seat another 2 couples as soon as they walked in the door!
I spoke up and was greeted with the most disgusting face I have ever seen, I was looked at as if I didn't belong and had spoken out of turn (like a school child!), the Maitre d look at the waitresses as if she was confused to hear that I was even waiting for a table! As if I was standing in the door way because I wanted to!
The food was no where near enough for me to even think of returning.
Dropped into the much talked about Mexico for a lunch one Sunday. Was told that it would be easier to get a seat at the Takapuna branch. The place was busy but not packed when I arrived. Got seated pretty quickly. It's set up with long tables (canteen style) so you may have to share tables with other diners. So don't expect that you'll necessarily get a table to yourself.
We had quite a selection of food that day. Admittedly, I'm no aficionado of Mexican food. Food was overall well presented and ingredients, fresh. My favourite was the pork quesadilla, apart from that, everything else was alright. Nothing I would shout about though.
Ordered a sangria which was not the best choice as I didn't like it at all. There weren't any fruits in the sangria. Maybe I should have stuck to something tequila seeing that it's a tequila bar -- oops. Wasn't up to drinking something heavy that day though.
Overall, service was average. It was quite difficult to get the wait-staff's attention at times. Also, we were given side plates (as we were sharing food) which were not very clean and had crumbs of food in them. I think they need to improve on their dish-washing as a knife was supplied with food scraps stuck it as well.
What I'll return for? Their quesadilla and to sample the tequila. Otherwise, an alright experience.
Lunched at Mexico Takapuna today after enjoying dinner in the city a few weeks ago. Was easy to get in on a Thursday and plenty of space, and the food arrived really quickly too - great for a quick lunch that's a bit different! The chicken quesadilla was delicious, as was the pork taco. Staff were very friendly.
Received such a warm welcome on arrival and very pleased to be able to say that was just the beginning of a fantastic night.
The CBD Mexico is a regular so I wasn't expecting anything different from Mexico Takapuna in terms of cuisine but it's the beachside setting that I love in particular.
If you want a recommendation, go for the ceviche - deliciously fresh and just the right amount of zest. Love what they've done at Mexico Takapuna too - the whole Mackenzies space is looking pretty cool and Im guessing something that Takapuna has been crying out for.
I think the key here is to arrive at Mexico Takapuna early! This place is so popular already and it's only going to get busier judging by the great night we had here!
We went in a small group and shared a variety of dishes, the beetroot dip is ahhmazing, and a great way to kick off a meal. Loved the chicken taco, and the lamb quesadilla. Only minor complaint - the sangria wasn't my taste exactly, but that's probably because we shared a couple of carafes and I would have normally had the red wine version - can't wait to go back and try it!
