Great food, great environment, well worth a visit :)
Mexicali Fresh is a great place to get a quick bite downtown. It's fresh and tasty and suitable for kids, and you don't need to book. Yes, there are plenty of lovely places to get a meal in Auckland, but when you want a nice place to sit and enjoy the view, and a meal that is just a step up from takeaways, Mexicali fits the bill nicely. Their taco salad is delicious as are the burritos. and because you can choose most of your fillings everyone is happy. I have had good experiences with the staff and the cleanliness, though you sometimes do have to wait a while if the queue is long.
Been to this place quite a few times lately. So this isn't an average review based on one-off experience but rather a note on consistent observations.
Whilst sitting outside Mexicali is lovely on a beautiful day, most of the tables were cluttered with leftovers from previous patrons. During the course of our dinner this was not seen to and consequently rubbish was blown about the place aided by the birds who were landing on the tables. Hardly an appetising experience. To sit down we have to clear and wipe our own table before gingerly beginning out meals.
The staff who served me were at times unsure of their own menu (charged me wrong prices or tried to omit things that were supposed to be there). Whilst my visits covered a mixture of dine-in and take away orders I noted that staff did not ask if you had a preference. For my takeaway order I had to repeatedly request a paper bag to carry everything in. Furthermore the staff attitudes varied from lively (but not necessarily friendly) to downright rude and condescending. On one occasion I saw one staff member serve a patron using the same gloved hands that had just previously been handling money - defeats the purpose of wearing gloves!
Whilst for the price, the meals are reasonable-ish this does not compensate for the lack of service and filthiness of the tables.
There is not shortage of cheap eats in the city. You can just as easily go elsewhere. It is a pity that Mexicali is let down by such simple matters because otherwise it is in a prime location.
Had Mexicali Fresh for lunch on Saturday to avoid the crowds at the restuarants down at Wynyard Quarter and loved it! Great service, they suggested toppings for my quasedilla, and a fun atmosphere. The food was amazing too, will definitely be back!
I can't resist this place. Can't say I've had better mexican food in NZ than here... and trust me I've searched. It's yummy and half price taco tuesdays make it cheap. Mexicali Fresh is not flash, but it does the job. Well.
We were satisfied with the size of the portion we got for the price.
Went to Mexicali Fresh on Friday lunchtime and was very impressed. The food was great, as were the range of drinks available.
The cashier was very friendly, but the other two making the food were a bit surly.
You choose what goes into your meal. The tacos weren't very full, but very tasty. Would definitely go back. Recommend you sit outside and enjoy the view looking out to sea. My partner is from Texas (on the border of Mexico)and was very impressed with the authenticity of the food.
