Bellota
(Tapas)
We wouldn't have expected any less than what Bellota offers from Peter Gordon when it came to the authenticity stakes. Peter Gordon isn't known to be an advocate of global fusion and to have a keen sense of international flavours for no reason. You'll be hard pressed to find a Mediterranean restaurant in Auckland that does more authentic urban Mediterranean than Bellota does. With a dedicated Spanish cheese list and a pintxos and montaditos menu, you'd know that Peter Gordon isn't taking his Mediterranean food lightly.

Cafe Karadeniz
(Cafe, Mediterranean)
Cafe Karadeniz is often swamped with students or an eclectic mix of patient-visiting Auckland locals, but don't let this Mediterranean cafe's coincidental proximity to the Auckland Hospital and University of Auckland campus deter you from paying trying their Mediterranean food. From the popular favourites like pitas to the more authentically Mediterranean staples such as lentil soup, dolma or moussaka, Cafe Karadeniz is one of the few cafes in Auckland that serve uncompromisingly authentic Mediterranean cuisine.

Casita Miro
(Spanish, Tapas)
Waiheke Island may be a little out there for most of Auckland, but we simply couldn't exclude Casita Miro from our call of the best Mediterranean restaurants in Auckland. This is restaurant dining with a difference; you often times get to meet the creators, the chefs and winemakers who are in action daily. At Casita Miro, the views are great, the music soft, and there are olive trees at your shoulder.

And in true Mediterranean style, Casita Miro's food is simple and no-frills, allowing the best of the produce Waiheke is gifted with to shine. From using miro extra Virgin Frantoio olive oil and their own home-cured olives to using fresh, seasonal Waiheke produce from their kitchen garden and from local producers – food at it’s freshest and best. Don't miss out on the opportunity to experience Mediterranean cuisine done the New Zealand way here at Casita Miro the next time you take a trip out of mainland Auckland!

Dida's Wine and Tapas Lounge
(Mediterranean, Spanish, Tapas)
A classic, this one! A Mediterranean restaurant and wine lounge spun off from a local wine and grocery peddler well over half a century old - why, a Mediterranean restaurant cannot possibly be anything less than fantastic with a heritage like that. And fantastic the Dida's Wine and Tapas Lounge is. With a tagline like 'Where Wine Meets Food' can you rest assured that an outing to this Auckland city fringe local will be offering an impressive wine selection and some classically and impeccably prepared tapas to go with. Bring on the duck parfaits and braised pork bellies, we say!

Ima Cuisine (formerly Ima and Ibn)
(Eastern European, Mediterranean)
Yael Shochat has a lot to be proud of; having migrated here from the Mediterranean years and years back and starting out with the humble bistro takeaway called The Lunch Box, she had come to be loved by the Auckland locals in the know for the genuinely authentic Mediterranean food she now crafts at Ima Cuisine.

Sahaa Medina
(African, Mediterranean, Moroccan)
In true Mediterranean fashion, Sahaa Medina - despite being set in the high-powered environment that is the Auckland CBD - will be sure to transport you to a whole new realm with its luxuriously upholstered silk cushions, fluorescent rustic lanterns and sheer draperies. It's decor only is the tip of this Mediterranean iceberg, though; wait til you have a taste of owner and chef Makhlouf Benyettou's cooking. From authentic Morroccan tagines to the seven-spice lamb, this Auckland Mediterranean restaurant gem will make a great departure from all the typical wine lounges that saturate the central Auckland CBD dining scene.

Vivace Restaurant & Bar
(Mediterranean, New Zealand)
Vivace Restaurant & Bar may just be one of the best kept late weekday Mediterranean lunch secrets in central Auckland CBD. Vivace Restaurant is the kind of place that is set to impress; a brooding atmosphere without being stand-offish and a decadently long list of premium wines available by the glass. This isn't a case of style over substance, though, because this Auckland Mediterranean restaurant takes its food just as seriously, even offering various set menus that showcase over half a dozen of their best tapas selection.
