The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
You couldn't get a better location on North Wharf - it's the first restaurant you come to after crossing the footbridge and also one of the first to start to establish a personality that differentiates itself from its neighbours. Amazing on a sunny day, we went when it was grey and drizzly and were more than happy sitting 'outside' surrounded by the clear canopies.
Food
Fantastic. We went for a selection of the hot skillets (all around the $10 - $12 mark) and were highly impressed. These included Roasted baby beetroot with pomegranate glaze & goats cheese (love it when it starts to merge into a pink mush), maple glazed pork belly, and veal schnitzel on warm potato salad. One of us got the hamburger with Asiago tasty cheese, Dijon mustard and streaky bacon and this got a big thumbs up. Would definitely recommend going down the small plates to share route.
Drinks
A good if unadventurous wine list at very reasonable prices, and most by the glass.
Service
Very friendly and helpful, though our waitress upon asking what breakfast options there are (none just so you know) did suggest we could order an organic egg from the side order menu (not quite what we had in mind!)
Highlights
Of the skillets, the grilled haloumi and mushrooms were a surprise hit, the mushrooms in particular being perfectly cooked, juicy and smacking of flavour. It's rare for me that a vegetarian dish will win out but in this case, they nailed it.
The Bottom Line
Marvel Grill may have started as 'one of the North Wharf restaurants', but it's pulling ahead of its neighbours thanks to a great menu and sharp service. Basically, have a drink at The Conservatory then dinner here. Forget the rest.
