The ViewAuckland Review
3 out of 5 stars
With over 85 Thai Restaurants in the Auckland region, it’s fair to say Thai cuisine is firmly entrenched as a genuine kiwi favorite. Cheap and cheerful, not a lot can go wrong flavourwise. However, there is Thai and then there is Thai.
Devonports’ Manna Thai has never been touted as a glowing example of Thai food yet on most Friday nights it is one of the few restaurants in Devonport is even remotely full.
A small restaurant in the northern end of Devonport village, Manna Thai was fairly well patronized by the time we turned up last Friday night.
Both sides of the dining space are littered with kitsch Thai knick knacks – from sequined Elephant –adorned pillows to the ever present Royal Family portrait.
Favoring a $7 bottle of Changi beer rather than any of the options from the terribly sparse wine list, we took a window seat to the front.
I liked the sound of the Gang Jud soup to start – pork flavored with vermicelli noodles; this was both hearty and flavoursome. My companion’s choice of the Gari Puff weren’t anywhere near as interesting or as it turned out, satisfying.
Our very friendly and efficient waiter was quick to replenish the beer supply and upon his insistence, I ordered the Kra Ta Ron – stir fried chicken with a sweet sauce and fresh veges, all served on a sizzling plate. An inspired choice I must say.
My partner couldn’t go past the Prawn Pad Kra Pao which she’d fallen in love with on a recent visit to Thailand. I saw just how tight the meal with the prawns so I didn’t dare ask for a sample – her verdict….when can we got to Thailand next!
Walking away with change from $80, we left a little disappointed and firmly of the opinion that our next Thai meal should be taken over the bridge (or on a beach in Koh Samui)!
