Maldito Mendez, Ponsonby - Restaurant Review

Maldito Mendez is our pick of the ‘street food’ eateries that have opened in the new Ponsonby Central location. Bubbling Latin beats, a terrific red tiled-bar and plenty of rustic timber furniture effortlessly recreate a cool café in the backstreets of South America.

Kitchen service is quick after you order at the bar, but on two separate occasions we’ve had to ask specifically for additional small plates to use when eating the shared dishes. This place is wildly popular at the moment, so try and visit during the lull between the lunchtime and dinner.

Drink's List

Craft beers from Stoke and wine from Revolution on tap, with a suitably Latin spin added with Moritz beer from Barcelona, good Mojitos and a few Spanish and South American wines.

Order up a storm from the ever-changing menu with zingy salads crammed with watermelon, mango and tomatillos ($10), tacos stuffed with pulled pork, grilled fish or braised beef ($15), and street food snacks like empanadas ($6) filled with leek, mozzarella, pecorino and walnuts. We’re also big fans of the crispy fried mandioca with chipotle aioli ($8) – just maybe the best chips and mayo you’ll ever have. Larger meals are also available ($25 to $28), and we’ve heard great things about the beef ribeye with chimmichurri and a black bean salad.

Feeling Peckish?

The taco filled with roast duck in a mole (chilli and chocolate) sauce – one of the spiciest but most well-balanced dishes we’ve eaten for a long time.

The Bottom Line

Well-priced, healthy and authentic – the owners are a Kiwi-Uruguayan couple – Maldito Mendez is easily the best of Auckland’s current South American/Mexican culinary wave.

A Reason To Return

For the excellent $10 desserts including churros with a chocolate dipping sauce and a silky smooth and boldly bitter chocolate mousse infused with olive oil.
