We've been here twice recently and are never disappointed. Their food is fresh and delicious - Mexican/latin American.

Their coconut chicken taco is a must as is their ceviche (delicious!). The cassava fries are a MUST as are the corn chips and guacamole to start. The cocktails are way too easy to drink!

Service is quick and friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed and cool.
We'll be back.

Made a bit of a last-minute call to head to Ponsonby Central last Friday in the hope that we could get a table at one of the eateries (fairly) easily - after around 20 mins circling to see exactly where we could get in, we decided to go for Maldito Mendez which I must admit I had overlooked a number of times on other visits.
First off - the wine list - although limited there were some real standouts (I really enjoyed the Rockburn(??) chardonnay). From the menu we shared some fantastic plates. The crispy skinned fish was delicious and the black bean salad surprisingly complimented it. Add in some Mandioca fries and the pulled pork taco - and you've got a meal worth savouring. Needless to say, I want be overlooking Maldito Mendez again.

At Maldito Mendez you will get Latin-American - empanadas, nachos, tacos, ceviche - rather than standard Mexican.

Maldito Mendez started life as a waterfront caravan operation during the Rugby World Cup before moving to Ponsonby Central.

It's a good-looking place: tiled walls and floor, old-school cafe furniture, including barstools. I like that now its getting colder the courtyard offers rugs and heaters.

The ceviche was good but being gluten free I was looking forward to the taco chips because I can have corn however not tortilla's that are wheat. However they were strange baked pieces of tortilla I think.

I think everything was drowned in red onion which is mostly what I could taste. Including the coconut chicken taco which was otherwise good except the onion.

And I didn't enjoy my first spiced chili hot chocolate, it hit my throat badly and was too dry and bitter tasting for me, I like my hot chocolate a little sweeter.

Met a friend at Maldito Mendez for lunch on Sunday and was very impressed. Our waitress was lovely and couldn't do enough to help us choose a wine and a selection of yummy food. We opted for the beef empanada and fish croquetta for starters which both were delicious. For mains we had a tasty fish taco which was full of fresh flavour and the beef mulita which was melt in the mouth. The bill was pretty reasonable at $68 including 2 glasses of creamy chardonnay. Maldito is a fun cafe which I will definitely be returning to.
