I was driving through Ponsonby on the way home with a friend and we decided to stop to have lunch, lulus was the cafe we walked into (wish we had not). Positives- it was clean and reasonably priced for the Ponsonby area, unfortunately they are the only positives. The service was NOT good! We walked in with a smile and said hi to the man behind the counter, he didn't even bother to look up from his newspaper. we thought maybe he didn't hear us, so we pondered the menu then ordered. Once we placed our order he grunted and walked off to the kitchen as if he was annoyed (sorry we decided to have lunch in your cafe. When our food finally came it was shoved to us on the table and then the server walked away nothing else said not even a enjoy your meal. The food was ok nothing special. The only thing that made it worthwhile was the laughs me and my friend had on the way home in reference to the crazy 80's hairstyles and appearances the two workers had! Was definitely flashback to the past excluding the good old fashioned service!
The best lasagna in Ponsonby! large sized meals, with friendly staff and good service. I live in the area and visit Lulus regularly.
Terrible experience - waiter was a grumpy gentleman who made the dining experience so awkward we left without ordering. On the way out he muttered 'typical'.
Won't be going back to Lulus. Ever.
I worked on Ponsonby Road for a year and ate at Lulu's as a preferred cafe with friends, family and colleagues and I was never disappointed with their menu nor their service. I found all the staff really helpful and in fact very obliging.
I popped into Lulu's on Ponsonby Road this weekend whilst shopping. I agree with the previous review - the service certainly is old fashioned - but not in a good way. Quite frankly the man serving freaked me out.
I'm not sure if he couldn't hear me or was just plain strange, but he stared at me for a full minute after I placed my order only to grumble and walk off to the kitchen.
I'll give the place its dues - it is a small, cosy little cafe and the food was OK - nothing fancy, but just what we needed. Just avoid it if you are easily put off by strange men!
I love this place; Lulu's is one of my favourite places for brunch in Auckland.
Great meals and old fashioned service from a husband and wife team.
