Having had nothing but success over the years with this reliable, cheap and always crammed Dominion Road restaurant, our luck left us some time last week.
Describing itself as a “Hong Kong style Chinese restaurant”, Love a Duck Restaurant is warm, loud, and usually serves up exemplary food. If you don’t order from the set menu, that is.
In the past I have tried the crispy duck (divine); lemon chicken (crunchy and so more-ish); the beef and black bean (tender and tasty); and plenty of fried noodles and snacks.
But last week, the enormous menu proved simply too much for my hunger, and my companion and I opted for a set banquet for two. Bad idea.
The banquet started with a watery soup which would have been quite nice if it weren’t for the bloodied pork knuckles floating in it. Next up were some excellent chicken money bags and vegetarian spring rolls.
Our mains consisted of beef black bean and shredded duck. The beef was good, as per usual. But where was the duck? On a huge steaming plate we found mussels, crab, scallops, prawns, shrimps, squid, pork, chicken and something round and white which we couldn’t identify. There were, indeed, a few pieces of duck hiding amongst it all, but all that unannounced seafood and meat had curbed our appetites somewhat.
This was our first bad experience in at least ten visits to Love a Duck Restaurant, so it wouldn’t be fair to let it put you off.
Get to Love a Duck early, order some spring rolls to settle your growling stomach, and be sure to order with a bit of independence.
