The ViewAuckland Review

Review byJono Park17/04/2011

18 glowing reviews can't be wrong - Little and Friday has been a firm favourite with View Auckland readers for some time now, and we've only just gotten around to getting there. We really should have done this earlier, as Little and Friday lives up to the hype.

All the good cafes at the moment seem to be tucked away down side streets off the main drag, Good One and Gala being two of these. Little and Friday is even more isolated, being on a side road between Takapuna and Devonport. It has the feel of a small school dining hall, complete with mismatched cutlery sitting in a jar and strung-up old school industrial lights. You even line up to order food from a glass display, which is easier said than done considering the wealth of treats on offer.

We went all out in our taste test, trying four different items between the two of us. For our savoury 'main' we went for two of their tarts - roasted vegetable topped with baked tomato slices, and roasted beetroot, spinach and blue vein cheese. The roasted vegetable tart looked quite standard but was insanely full of flavour, the pastry crumbling beautifully as our forks greedily pushed into it. The beetroot, spinach and blue vein tart was more dense, but with lovely earthy flavours, the blue vein perhaps not coming through as strongly as hoped but that didn't stop it from being completely demolished.

For dessert, we got a plum and boysenberry custard tart and cinnamon brioche. It's hard to pick which one was better as personal preferences came into play. I'm a sucker for custard and baked fruit, so the tart hit all the right spots for me, the fruit having a lovely sharp flavour, offset by the soft sweetness underneath. My girlfriend isn't as much a custard fan so the brioche got higher marks from her. I have to say that the brioche was the best I've tasted. Ever. The Coffee Supreme flat whites accompanied the desserts perfectly. And all this sitting at a lovely big communal table with the Herald spread out in front of us. Sublime.

It's impossible to fault the food - it's unbelievably good. We did have a small issue with how long it took for our food to be heated, but given that we were there at the lunchtime peak on a Saturday, they can be easily overlooked, especially when what arrived at our table was so wonderful.

Little and Friday is incredibly good and seriously worth the drive over the bridge. If that's too much of a stretch, then hold on - they have a Newmarket outlet coming soon. And if it's anywhere near as good as the North Shore original, then Aucklanders everywhere should experience this at least once if not many times more.

A Flat White costs: $4

Must Try:everything - it's all so very very good
