Kushi is one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in town. I have taken various friends here on many occasions and each time has been great. I especially enjoy coming in for lunch as they have a $9.95 special - you choose between chicken, fish or tofu and it comes served with rice, vegetables, sushi and miso soup. It is a cheap and tasty meal that is best shared with a group of friends. I also love Kushi because they serve one of my favourite foods, Takoyaki. And they do it well. Takoyaki is a ball shaped Japanese snack with an octopus filling inside. I think it has a great flavour, a mix between sweet and savoury. I will keep coming back to Kushi because the food is always yummy and the staff are very friendly which makes the experience even better.

Kushi Japanese Restaurant has a great atmosphere and ambience. Lighting is a bit dim, but could offer a rather romantic feel if that's what you're after.

They have got a variety of beverage options available, both local and Japanese. We tried the house sake, served hot, which we liked. It wasn't too dry and easy to drink.

Food, was average. Portion sizes were reasonable. They have a reasonable selection of food, but not much sushi choices. I wouldn't say that sashimi / sushi is where their strength lies either.

I ordered the Valentine's special set which overall, was okay. My chawan-mushi was served cold, which is different from other Japanese restaurants I've been to who serve it hot. The scotch fillet which came with my meal was tasteless though even though served with a sauce. My companions had the chicken katsu set and the chicken teriyaki set. Both were alright, but the teriyaki sauce was too cloyingly sweet for my liking. Tempura served with all meals were very good.

Service-wise, staff were friendly and helpful. They did their best to explain things to you and also made superb effort to meet your requests. Instead of the green tea and black sesame ice-cream combo, I'd asked to be given only black sesame ice-cream which they obliged. Service was quite slow though, but it was probably cause they were busy on that day. Could maybe do with one or two more staff as it's a rather big restaurant.

A satisfying dining experience overall due mostly to the service and atmosphere. Food is not the best but I would return for the convenience. Kushi offers $3 overnight parking at the Tournament carpark right opposite the restaurant. Smack bang in the middle of town, you can dine at Kushi and then head somewhere else as parking is valid until the next morning.

I recommend getting the set meals as they're worth the money. Fried food's their forte. They also have a large floor seating area at the back of the restaurant, perfect for bigger groups.
