The ViewAuckland Review
3 out of 5
It was only Monday, yet we found ourselves queuing outside KK Malaysian Cuisine in Epsom, Auckland. However, from experience we knew the wait would not be long.
KK Malaysian Cuisine couldn’t fit more than 30 people into its cramped and sparse room, so there is no dilly-dallying for the cooks or consumers.
Dishes arrive fast, diners are not encouraged to linger and, as a result, you can be in and out of this restaurant in 30 minutes.
Our party of four was given the table in the back corner—that’s about five paces from the door—and menus, tea and a waitress were with us in minutes.
One beef mee goreng, two chicken laksas and a mummy chicken, thank you very much. There are a few Asian beers to choose from—otherwise you can BYO from the Liquorland across the road.
Like all Asian restaurants where the culture is to share, our dishes arrive at intervals.
The mummy chicken arrived first: tender bites of bony chicken in a sweet and sticky sauce on rice.
Next were the laksas—very generous for the $9 purchase price—and perfectly sweet and spicy. The chicken is of the skin and bone variety that Europeans diners don’t tend to enjoy, but there was a mountain of egg noodles in the middle to compensate.
And then, the mee goring was delivered; a delicious smoky and meaty flat noodle dish, mild enough to cool us off between mouthfuls of laksa.
For just under $40 we managed to feed four hungry adults, with enough left over for a doggie bag (pack it yourself at your table).
If you’re after silver-service, then this Auckland restaurant is not for you. But, if speed is on your hit list, then head to KK Malaysian Cuisine.
