Kensan is definitely one of my favourite places for an economical yet authentic Japanese meal. The staff are so friendly and you feel really welcome when you enter, and appreciated when you leave. In terms of food, I usually go for the katsu chicken curry which is up there with the best I've had. A good amount of meat, curry, rice and veges. The dishes are pretty cheap too, and they do some lunch deals including beer and snacks - what's not to like?

Kensan Japanese Kitchen Cafe is the sister restaurant to the ever popular Ken Yakitori on Anzac Ave. I dropped in for dinner a few nights ago to sample their food after checking out their menu previously while walking past.

The deco was basic but functional. Seating was comfortable enough.

We were given menus for both the cafe and neighbouring Ken Yakitori. In the evenings, you're able to order from both restaurants which is ideal if you're wanting yakitori / kushiyaki but in a quieter and less smoky atmosphere.

There's a wide selection and variety of food to choose from. We had a mix of food from both the cafe and Ken Yakitori menus.

Food in general was tasty and well presented. There were some dishes which I thought are better in other restaurants. However, in general, I have no complaints. The kushiyaki / yakitori were delicious with a nice smoky flavour to it owing to the fact that charcoal is used to cook them.

The cafe's meal portions are reasonable and so are the prices. Meals from neighbouring Ken Yakitori are pricier as you'll have to order a few items to fill you up. But they're good as sides to any meals you order.

There's also a variety of drinks available at Kensan.

I love Kensan's concept and the flexibility of being able to order stuff from Ken Yakitori too. Personally, I prefer the seating in Kensan over Ken Yakitori so I am quite happy with this arrangement.
