The restaurant is a pretty two tiered restaurant with an open plan kitchen. We were one of the first to arrive in a busy lunch service and where situated right in front of the kitchen. We received a pleasant greeting from the maître d’ who explained the menu and some wines from the list.
My wife had a doubled sized tomato and mozzarella salad as her main which was beautifully fresh with large chunks of buffalo mozzarella, pine nuts, balsamic, rockett and 3 different preparations of tomatoes and I had the Black Angus Sirloin, I’m never one to complain about pricing and fully understand the workings of the kitchen but it’s interesting that when you order a steak that is precisely what you get, a steak, and in some cases for in excess of $40. Once you have added your sides your main course can end up costing well into the $50 region! You know this best be the best steak in the world! To go with the steak we ordered creamed spinach, mash and beans.
To begin with the service was impeccable, friendly and very attentive but with time and as the restaurant became busier the service slid, for some reason you aren’t allowed to have you own wine and they insist on pouring it then taking it away. This is all well and good but several times I’m looking around wanting to not have an empty glass with no luck. The same happened when it came time for desserts menus, we kept asking for menus and they kept forgetting.
Was it the best steak I’ve had? I didn't stick in my memory as being the best but it was expertly cooked to perfection and it was a great steak. Also the creamed spinach was brilliant, my wife hates spinach and even she loved it. We also had the chocolate fondant which was superb and brilliantly oozy in the centre so a great success.
Overall the food is quality but you pay the price. You will get one of the best Steaks in the city and would certainly find it hard to find a more consistently cooked one. The service is hit or miss but it’s definitely worth a visit

Popped into Jervois Steak House last night after booking through View (nice system!) and had a great meal - first time I've sat upstairs and the atmosphere was great. The staff are always so attentive and the barman was friendly to chat to. Definitely recommended.

Absolutely outstanding dining experience had at the JSH last week. My husband and I ventured along on Thursday for a belated birthday celebration.
I had been to Jervois Steak House once before years ago when it first opened, however my husband hadn't been but after the fantastic service and delicious food we both experienced I dare say we'll become fairly regular patrons.
Is there a better steak than their Hawkes Bay Scotch fillet? I don't thing so!
Thanks Jervois Steak House for making this birthday celebration even more special!

Hosted a group of 10 in the private room at Jervois Steakhouse and couldn't have been happier with the food and service. We were impressed with the standard of the food. Delicious steak, tuna and desserts to die for!

Generally very good food quality. The steaks, pork and fish all excellent with nice sauces and side dishes all served seperately. Atmosphere and service very good. Be warned this is not a cheap restaurant and we were offered sparkling or still water at the beginning of the meal. Upon taking the offer of still water for our table of 12 we spent $70 on bottled water. This was not clearly explained and there was no offer of filtered water as an alternative!
