Parnell is fast becoming the Friday night destination. Revellers are well served with culinary delights from the world over - Russian, French, Italian -- and with the Java Room, Parnell now boasts the best of Asia.
Despite it's secluded location, Java Room on this Friday visit was simply swarming with people. Inside the simple white walls, classic wooden tables and subtle touch of Asian decoration, combine to make the Java Room appear clean, smart and comfortable. If, by chance you are looking for the wow appeal, look no further than the impressive veranda boasting beautiful views over the city.
Seated by the window our waitress, although totally run off her feet, remained highly professional. The wine list is an all-kiwi affair, with the option of BYO also available. Nothing really stood out so we opted for both Singha and Kingfisher. Not bad at $6 a pop.
Recognised for its diversity, the Java Room’s unique menu offers a selection from the Pacific Rim. I ordered the Japanese entrée of sashimi ($14); delicious raw salmon garnished with mesculun salad and pickled ginger. While my companion enjoyed the zesty Vegetable Tom Yum soup ($7).
The restaurant was churning through the covers – and they all appeared to be suitable impressed. My companion’s Pad Thai ($17) was excellent, a generous portion with plenty of chicken, noodles, tamarind juice with crushed peanuts and chives as a garnish.
My choice of main went with the Hot Ruby Prawns ($23). Fresh King prawns swimming in the spiciest red curry I’d enjoyed in a long time – and my taste buds responded accordingly! I did manage to quell the fire pit in my mouth, eventually.
With expectations exceeded and appetite sated, we left the Java Room pleasantly surprised and primed for the night along the strip knowing that a return visit would not be too far away.
