I had heard a lot of positive about Jam and I looked forward to our lunch there. The place was busy as I have heard it always is so we started by sitting outside, it was pretty cold but the friendly waitstaff provided us with a blanket and a heater and when there was a table available we were instantly whisked in to the vacant table. Great start, great service.
We ordered food and as usual just to get a real sense of things we ordered to much. I got Takapuna rarebit and a laksa, wife ordered egg on toast and a hash. Important to note we told our waiter no bacon with the eggs as wife is a vegetarian.
I love Welsh rarebit so was looking forward to trying the Organic Jam version. However unfortunately it didnt even resemble in flavour, texture or visually a traditional rarebit at all. I am more than happy for chefs to put their spin on things but it at least has to bring memories or similarities to the original. The Laksa was good though, nice flavour simple nothing out of the ordinary.
Now problem, scrabbled eggs were great no issues, but remember my previous comment about the vegetarian thing, well the hash was full of bacon! It doesnt say anything on the menu about bacon and generally hash wouldnt have bacon. I would be interested in other peoples views on this. Should we ask about every dish from now on because it doesnt have a little v next to it? Actually to be honest again the rarebit doesnt traditionally have bacon and it didnt say on the menu bacon so Im glad she didnt order that either!
I dont expect to have everything written on the menu but an important ingredient like bacon I would of thought would appear!
Anyway again the front of house staff dealt with it well and service throughout was excellent.
Will never eat here again. Staff are very rude. I went on a Saturday and asked to use the bathroom which you need a swipe card for, there were 4 young girls and one male at the counter when I approached and they all looked at me and not one of them bothered to acknowledge me. I asked to use the bathroom and they said the card was in use so I returned to my seat. After 20 minutes I returned to the counter and wasn't acknowledged again and asked for the bathroom card and they said they didn't know where it was. It took 10 minutes for a staff member to give us the menus and a further 15 minutes for her to take our order and the food was a 30 minute wait. The staff looked unprofessional gossiping at the counter, the majority wore their long hair down and one hadn't bothered to wear a bra. I really enjoy the food at this cafe, it is such a shame about the staff!
Had lunch here today - always been meaning to whenever in Takapuna as there's always big queues (to be fair one of the only places in takapuna that seems to have that problem).
Really busy but did manage to get a table without too much of a wait. I had the special of the day - lamb and a couscous salad with a yogurt dressing. Lamb was cooked perfectly and the couscous was good - only really complaint on the meal side of things was the size of the cutlets.
Good coffee too - I can see why Jam Organic Cafe is top of the pops in takapuna!
Below average food, unsure what everyone raves about. Staff were rushed, fairly rude.
Jam Cafe is probably the best in Takapuna (I'd put it ahead of Takapuna Beach) - food's really delicious and coffee good. They must be sitting on a gold mine because it's always busy with the North Shore 'it' crowd! Try the white choc crumble with yogurt - delicious!
It's awesome having a quality cafe like Jam in Takapuna. Love the organic food (eggs are delicious) and the coffee is good and strong. Good job Jam!
Jam Organic Cafe is one Takapuna cafe worth seeking out. Just off Hurstmere Road, Jam Organic Cafe seemed to be the busiest spot in Takapuna when I visited today (lunchtime)...so busy that people were waiting for tables (and were prepared to wait at that).
The blackboard menu looked great but I just opted for a mocha and some great salad from their deli menu.
Staff were friendly (and pretty!) and despite the popularity, weren't quick to rush patrons off. Takapuna doesn't have a huge amount of dining options but now that I've found out about Jam Organic Cafe, now there's a great reason to venture back into town.
