consistently encounter good food and even greater service at Jafa in Grey Lynn. I must go there at least once a month and to date have never been disappointed.
I had the poached eggs on toast this morning - not the most adventurous of meals but so many places get poaching eggs wrong - pleased to say not Jafa...looking forward to next month's visit.
I have been to Jafa on numerous occasions and on all my occasions the food has always been amazing. The chicken salad is one of my favourites always fresh and full of flavour, as I find most salads in cafes are quite boring and bland. On one occasion I was lucky enough to get the last special of the day which was the crab risotto which was incredible. The milkshakes are always great value for money and the overall menu just so refreshing. I have read some of the other reviews and have been quite surprised as Jafa is one of my favourites and never seems to disappoint, however I have yet to ever visit Jafa during the busy and hectic weekends.
My fiance and I had brunch at Jafa this morning, purely because it had received such awesome reviews. Sadly we were really not impressed. The servers were polite and friendly, but very obviously prioritised older, more 'wealthy' looking customers. After ordering quite quickly, we had to wait a painfully long time for our food to arrive. During this wait, we finished our drinks (milkshake and a flat white) and were left to stare at each other while waiting. We were never offered water, and even when our food arrived, we were not asked it we would like another drink. When we finally got to eat something, it was pretty average. I built my own breakfast, but only enjoyed the 'homemade beans', my fiance had the cumin and feta potato cakes and wasn't impressed either. They were bland and we couldn't find any trace of feta. We also tried the vanilla risotto, but it tasted more like a can of rice pudding. Some of the other food coming out of the kitchen looked very impressive, so maybe we just ordered the wrong things. The upstairs area was also very loud and it was difficult to talk with each other. Overall, we were really disappointed. Jafa reviewed so strongly that we had very high hopes for it, but after our experience there, it's unlikely we'll return.
We Visit Jafa often as we work close by - Milk shakes are massive and oh so good!!!! Havent eaten there yet as we only have time for a coffee or milk shake in my case
Jafa is the latest cafe from the family who brought you Benediction. Mum Tosh, and sons Tim - house manager and Johnny - head chef have created a good atmosphere in Jafa, in what was a former struggling grey lynn restaurant. The menu is varied with solid favourites like eggs benedict, and restaurant quality dishes like pea and ham risotto, classic ceasar salad, and healthy options like Raw power salad. They also do the most electrifying espresso milkshake.
The coffee is excellent, using famed allpress rangitoto blend delivered daily. Barista Glen has been in the business for years - chances are he has made you a coffee before at Santos in the last ten years before he came to jafa! The prices are on the steep side for some items - but once you recieve your food ( which may take a while on the weekends as they are very busy ) you will not think twice about coming back. Seriously the most solid and consistently good cafe, no - breakfast restaurant in auckland.
I popped into this cafe recently for the first time and thought... great, another local buzzing cafe for good quality coffee. I was only stopping in for a couple of takeaway coffees and cakes but was sorely disappointed. I waited an entire 15 mins for my coffees and then they were the worst coffees we had had in a very long while. Weak and milky! Not worth the wait at all. I left feeling rather peeved. I cannot comment on the food other than the cakes, which were good. As for the quality coffee and the waiting time, a big fat let down. I may have to give them a second chance, but do I want to waste my money and time?
Great atmosphere, great music!, Excellent service and very well priced! Highly recommend and will go back to Jafa for sure!!
Had heard such great things about Jafa, we decided to try it for brunch. First impressions were good - cool interior and very busy. The problem was it was too busy.....we waited 20 mins for coffee to arrive and a further 15 mins for our food order to be taken. The food was also a mixed bag. Small ceaser salad (without the egg) and runny scrambled eggs? In saying that, my brother loved the Jafa steak sandwich. I'd probably go back, but earlier or later to beat the crowds.
The coffee was outstanding, the staff are friendly and the food was fantastic. I will definitely be heading back there for brunch.
