I've lived in the Ponsonby/Grey Lynn area for three months now and Il Forno is one of my favourite places to frequent! I don't usually comment on these types of websites, but as the below comments were extremely out of date and inaccurate I felt the need to.

First of all, the food is delicious and incredibly reasonably priced. The baked bread is far superior to anything that can be bought from a supermarket (and again, I was shocked at how cheap it was for a loaf!), and the atmopshere is cozy.

If in the area, Il Forno is definitely a place that should be frequented for great coffee and food :)

This is possibly the worst place in Auckland. I agree with akcanada that the service at Il Forno is terrible and the coffee tastes like burnt dirt. I will NEVER go to Il Forno despite the fact the food is ok. the staff are too rude and indifferent.

Ive been here a couple of times because they have great breakfast sandwiches, however service is really going downhill with staff chatting and potentially the assist manager spending too much time giving orders to staff instead of taking orders from customers. It took 15 mins to toast a sandwich while there 3 customers including me in the cafe. Coffee is always burnt, I order a long black and I was hoping they had changed their coffee supplier in the past year however they have not. Could be really good however I will only be back for a sandwich if I have time to wait.

After hearing about Il Forno from some friends last week we were really eager to check out this Ponsonby cafe.
Great coffee and some nice treats for the kids - service was a bit slow but in fairness it was quite busy with people escaping the rain.
Not one of Ponsonby's most well known cafes but still worth seeking out.
