The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
A neighbourly feel to this Jervois Road bar and eatery - but there's no disguising the fact that you are in one of Auckland's more affluent suburbs. 'Money' seemed to be the topic of many conversations overheard, yet the vibe was still low-key and certainly without the pretentiousness that you're likely to encounter just a kilometre or so south-east.
Service
Although we were served by no less than four different people, great to see that the friendly and un-obtrusive manner in which they operated was consistent amongst them all.
Highlights
Perfect for sharing, Herne Bay Local's small plate menu was just the ticket. Standouts included the Szechuan Salt and Pepper squid ($12), and Kara Age Chicken ($12). The hand cut fries certainly had their support from this fan base as well.
Most Surprising Dish
The baby back ribs - a fiery combination of flavours but certainly not suitable for sharing (even for a taste).
Drinks List
For such a small venue, Herne Bay Local's wine list is actually pretty comprehensive. Marlborough and Waiheke Island labels feature prominently and at the time of our visit there were some very good specials to be had on SOHO wines. Unfortunately the beer list fell flat - a sparse offering with no really redeeming features.
The Bottom Line
An intimate bar that you'd be happy to call your local (and many no doubt wish they could).
A Reason To Return
For Herne Bay Local's Wednesday Curry Night...$18 Curry and $22 jugs of Tiger Beer...I can't think of too many better ways to spend 40 notes.
