Hectors Restaurant & Lobby Bar

The restaurant is perfect for high tea; it’s in a conservatory setting and is very English country garden only surrounded by conferences and a huge stainless steel kitchen! They use Harney and Sons Tea which is a nice tea which I think puts and emphasis on presentation as they come in little silk bags. The flavour is not bad either.
Starting with the sandwiches they were ham and mustard, egg mayo, salmon and cream cheese and the very boring avocado and tomato. The ham, egg and salmon were fine but on this high tea tour I’m doing I’ll be honest I am pretty fed up of these boring vegetarian ideas a lot of these places are coming up with. My message is simple vegetarians shouldn’t be punished for their choice of lifestyle, let’s see some flair and not just chopped up veggies on bread.
Scones looked great and tasted also great and to boost they actually gave enough jam and cream per person and the first time I haven’t had to ask for more.
The sweets were very colourful and pleasant to look at. Strawberries featured highly on the sweet plate a surprise considering how out of season they are it did help in presentation. The plate consisted of a chocolate éclair, FOUR lamingtons, fruit tart, chocolate sponge and a chocolate dipped strawberry.
I’m not a fan of Lamingtons (sorry I know they are a kiwi favourite) but they were fine, chocolate sponge was also nice to eat. Fruit tart is on loads of menus and I’m a little bored of it to be honest and this was not exception, pre made pastry an Anglaise sauce and a bit of fruit on top. The éclair was excellent and full of cream, crispy and well-presented and then I saved myself for the strawberry, the berry season was a distant memory from the previous year and too far away from the next season to be even in my mind so I was looking forward to a treat however it showed how out of season it was as the strawberry was bitter and to be honest literally left a sour taste in my mouth at the end of an otherwise pretty good high tea.

Breakfast at Hectors Restaurant, in the Heritage Hotel, is a treat! Brings back fond memories of being taken as a small girl to Farmers (the big department store where The Heritage now stands). There in the rooftop restaurant, one would be served luncheon by elderly waitresses in proper, frilly aprons and caps. It was all part of the Day in Town which was one of the highlights of school holidays.


But now, Hectors Restaurant fairly sings with its bright parrot coloured decor and trickling water features. We like to breakfast there - surrounded by live palms and international visitors.


They cater to every breakfast taste. Included, is a table of Asian delights. Such exotic fare comes too early in the day for us! Instead, we choose from an array of every sort of yoghurt, cereal, toasts, breads and croissants - before going on to the hot dishes.

All the 'usual suspects are here - and all cooked to perfection. There is, of course, an excellent choice of fresh seasonal fruits, and waiters (not in caps and aprons, alas) bring around pots of coffee and tea.
