As I veered hesitantly down the gravel track, wondering if I’d taken the right turn, I was suddenly greeted by an expanse of land that was surprising in suburban Auckland , particularly in Botany where new builds are crammed together and every spare bit of ground is taken! Pukekos roam and a gorgeous historic cottage sat amidst a huge lawn and orchard, with a tiny sign on the gate that declared that it was indeed Open!

Upon entering the hallway with its guestbook and cottage ornaments, I peeked into library, children’s and lounge themed dining rooms on the way to the reception. I was still not convinced this was actually a café until I was handed the menu and given a choice of indoor, outdoor or conservatory dining!

A changing spring afternoon didn’t put me off a rustic seat in the charming garden and after ordering our lunch from a menu that didn’t really suit the historic soundings - lasagna, burgers and salads screamed more of a gastro-pub than a garden cottage - I had time to wander through the extensive grounds, admiring the blooming flowers and the quaint furnishings and children’s toys. It really was quite hard to believe I was in the middle of a bustling city and the historic setting was refreshingly different to the ubiquitous modern cafes that abound Auckland .

Disappointingly, the food at Hawthorn Dene Historic Country Cafe was pretty average … the Chicken/Avocado burger” had a beef patty and something that may or may not have been chicken, the quiche was bland and overpowering of brie and the Home-made burger patty was thin and barely there.

I refuse to let that taint the outing though … because although Hawthorn Dene Historic Country Cafe is a local café in the city, it really did feel like an outing to the country. I noticed that scones with jam were on the menu so I am tempted to return and indulge in some real traditional fayre with some “tea and scones” and think that this will be a more suitable way to enjoy the tranquil surrounding

Amazing food, just delicious. And very friendly service. Has changed management now and the new owners are just lovely. Would recommend to all. Stunning quiet atmosphere in the country also!
