The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
Hanoi Village is a breezy and colourful escape from gritty K’Rd, with interesting murals and paintings.
Service
Prompt and efficient from the friendly family owners, recent arrivals from the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi.
Drinks List
Hanoi Village isn’t licensed, but don’t miss the robust Vietnamese-style coffee, served in dinky individual filters.
Highlights
Excellent
pho Hanoi (Hanoi-style rice noodle soup). Most other Vietnamese restaurants in Auckland serve flavours from southern Vietnam, but Hanoi Village stays true to the cuisine of northern Vietnam. That means hearty soups laced with broths of excellent depth of flavour. Try the
pho bo tai, beef noodle soup, an absolute Hanoi classic that’s perfect for chilly winter days.
Most Suprising Dish
Banh cuon, or freshly steamed rice paper rolls, are another iconic Hanoi street food dish, and we’re pretty certain no-one else serves them in Auckland. Try them with shrimp, Asian mushrooms and fried shallots. Good luck in resisting ordering a second plateful.
The Bottom Line
In a city of southern-style Vietnamese food, Hanoi Village is a real find, with excellent and authentic versions of street food classics from Vietnam’s northern capital.
A Reason To Return
The
banh xeo, Vietnamese-style omelette, crammed full of minced poir, vermicelli and coriander.
