K Road has more and more great little restaurants popping up that have become my favourites. A Lebanese restaurant by the name of Gemmayze St. has popped up in the newly renovated St Kevin’s Arcade which I walk thru every day on my way to work. The tables spill out of the tiny premise to the windowed end of the arcade where we got the Queens table – sitting up above everyone else.Samir Allen, a New Zealand Chef with strong Lebanese roots and having worked alongside Ben Bayly at The Grove decided to go it alone and start up this joint. Most of the food is in mezze form, small plates designed to share. For the full Lebanese experience it's recommended you go 'jeeb' - which for $50 a head gets you a banquet , chosen by the kitchen which I wish we had of chosen as we didn’t get value for money with the tiny dishes we unknowlingly chose. My highlights were the classic Lebanese fried cauliflower with caramelised cauliflower puree and toasted almonds. I preferred the generous Labna at Beirut to this one which blink and you could have missed it. The falafels would be dry if it were not for the hummus and hardly a main dish. A few greens to make it a meal wouldn’t go astray. For dessert we had pistachio parfait with caramelised filo pastry rose-flavoured floss and freeze dried raspberries, it’s quite the sensation. The 'Gemmayze St Mess' - rhubarb, burnt white chocolate, caramelised pear and filo we enjoyed too.My rating is that it’s worth the try but go with a big wallet so you can try everything to fill yourself and go in a small group so you can share but in my opinion it’s far from as good as Beirut which I would sooner go back to.
