Ok...let me get this off my chest first. Gala is not the best G-titled cafe in Auckland. That little award goes to Good One, which I utterly love (read my review here). In fact, I've been there at least 2 times a week this year. But you don't really want to read a big gush-sess right? Instead, let me tell you about my one and a quarter visits to Gala, Metro's 2010 Best Cafe award winner.

Google Maps is a must when visiting Gala. It's tucked away down a side road in Mount Eden, and even if you get there you'll still have to poke around the business block it's nestled in to find it. The first time we visited, it was a rainy Sunday morning. The place was teaming, but not bursting. Certainly there were no tables available straight away. Having been in a similar situation recently at Cafe on Kohi (see that review here), I perhaps was expecting some work put in by staff to get us seated. Instead, after being told that it would be a half-hour wait for a table and 20 minute wait on food after that, we definitely got more of a 'go away' vibe than a 'stay and we'll sort it out'. So we left.

Second visit - MUCH more successful. It was a late lunch-type situation, around that 2pm mark where it's still busy but you can definitely et that outside table. I got the Harry's Bar egg sandwich. It sounds a bit low-rent, but was really quite lovely. Four beautifully made egg sandwiches which a delicious light mayonnaise and anchovies, accompanied by side salad of cos lettuce and grated parmesan. Cute and delightful.

My friend got the fruit salad which was perhaps a bit small for the price, but apparently was pretty good. Shame that the lime wedge to squeeze on top was completely dry, but I'm going to put that down to seasonality (have you seen the cost of limes these days? Unbelievable!). The coffees were lovely as well, and the service this time around definitely made up for the previous visit.

Gala certainly looks the part - it's bright, has a good buzz and if you can get a table outside in the sun, you're sorted. Whether it quite deserves the accolade of best cafe in Auckland, I'm not so sure but it's definitely up there in the top bracket. Will visit again (if I can find it).

The details: 23 Edwin Street, Mount Eden. Phone 09 623 1572

A Flat White costs: $4.30

Must Try: Harry's Bar Egg Sandwich, especially if you're an anchovy lover
