4 out of 5

With Simon Gault at the helm, Euro is distinctly more recognisable as one of Auckland’s best restaurants than as a lively downtown bar.

Nevertheless, Euro seemed to attract a fair swathe of the drinking-only Viaduct visitors on a recent Friday night.

It is unashamedly swanky, which I guess is part-in-parcel of life down this end of town, and one gets the feeling you wouldn’t be welcomed with open arms if your sporting the latest pair of Chuck Taylors or the like.

The six or so of us visited at around 9.30pm and, although still early in the night, the tunes were cranking—great for us: not so great for the diners I would have thought.

The fellas opted for beers—Hahn Premium ($8) seemed to be the favoured choice; while the ladies initially opted for a well-priced bottle of Kim Crawford Flowers ($55).

The sound system worked a treat. By around 10.30ish, it was basically standing room only. The place was awash with very excitable people … little wonder, considering the quality of female clientele in attendance.

High rollers were in attendance, and more than a few bottles of Pol Roger were exchanged over the bar—so it seemed we weren’t the only ones having a good time.

I guess that’s the appeal of Euro: whether drinking or dining, all who visit should expect a good time—just be ready and able to pay for it!
