With its elegant front and it's historic architecture (over 100 years old), the Esplanade certainly ticks the 'quaint venue' box and it's location is great, particularly if using the ferry. They have played up the 'old world charm' with old artifacts, photographs, art etc. on the wall and the sign in the men's bathroom stating the urinal was the 1902 original structure that had been 'found' behind walls when renovating certainly creates a talking point!
The menu is pricey, but what you'd expect from a heritage hotel (imagine the costs related to upkeeping that fabulous historic building!). The descriptions certainly get the appetite rolling but don't get too excited, the meals were quite average - just about tasty enough to nearly justify the price.
The service left a little to be desired with a dour looking maitre d' who barely acknowledged me when I informed her that one of the ladies' toilets had run out of toilet paper but the waitress was chirpy enough.
Altogether, with it's wonderful architecture, elegance and history this hotel/restaurant is definitely worth a visit. Expect to pay a lot for the privilege though and don't expect amazing food or service and you'll be satisfied.
