El Humero is a great place for lunch in Takapuna. It is cosy and warm at the moment (even out the back as they have heaters), and the lunch special is great value on some weekdays (not Friday). With the mains, you choose your BBQ meat and then a choice of sides and sauces. I really like the arepa with cheese. A salad is also included. The meat has a lovely smokey flavour and is always tender - yumm!

What a fantastic experience El Humero is! Visited early last saturday and although it was before 6, the restaurant was certainly in full swing. El Humero is not a big space so if you can, phone ahead. Us kiwis can learn a thing or two about bbq-ing - the hombres at El Humero have got it down to a fine's not a place for veges but fill your boots if you love pork, beef and chicken! I had the slow cooked port which was melt-in-the mouth good but amongst our party of four, the meat platter also looked great - even the skewers got rave reviews. It isn't currently licensed but once it is, certainly looks like I'll be making a lot of return visits.

El Humero is a carnivores heaven! Of all the new places in Takapuna, El Humero is the one I've been looking forward to trying the most and awesome to see it has lived up to the hype. OK, it might not be the place that you take your lady to for date night but if you're on a protein mission, check this place out at Forteith and Hurstmere. It's Columbian style bbq and pretty reasonable considering the portion sizes. Looking forward to more visits to El Humero this winter - just the ticket for cold, winter days!
