The ViewAuckland Review
4 out of 5 stars
Don’t be fooled by the small setting for one of Auckland’s newest Mexican restaurants, El Camino, because despite its demure setting this place packs a punch.
It’s the type of place you’d stumble across accidentally, head inside for a look and sit down for a bite to eat. By the time you leave, you’ll be vowing to return and soon enough it’s a regular haunt for you and your mates.
It’s no secret Aucklanders haven’t been served the best of Mexican cuisine in the past, but El Camino does its best to restore some faith for those who enjoy a good burrito, tortilla or nachos. You will be impressed with the flavour and generous servings delivered here. Besides, I always think it’s a good a sign when you can see the kitchen from your table, and as suspected here, the chef had nothing to hide.
The one-woman crew worked efficiently and with passion to deliver delicious order after order the busy Friday night I visited.
Behind the bar, there’s Mexican beer, cocktails and some of the best tequila available in the city – or so I’m readily informed by those who enjoy a good tequila. As I’d started the night on Sav, I stayed with Sav and the Gunn Estate white ($6.50 per glass) went perfectly with my chicken nachos ($12.50), which I highly recommend. Meanwhile, my companion drank Czech beer ($7) and indulged in the beef enchiladas ($18.50), which he highly recommends.
And while the food alone is worth a visit (there are vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options), you won’t be disappointed with the setting. Nestled just a door or two up from the popular pub, The Kingslander, El Camino opened its doors earlier this year. There are a few seats outdoors and a few more wooden tables and stools inside. There’s room for 20 seated, or 35 standing, so if you’re keen on eating here over the weekend I’d make a booking.
Once inside you’ll be greeted by cheerful and helpful staff. It’s a casual and cosy atmosphere with a mix of Wellington dub music and South American salsa playing in the background. Travel photos of the owner on a recent trip to South America are dotted around the colourful walls, making you feel welcome and part of the party.
The owners themselves say ‘forget the passionless impostors, come to El Camino and reignite your love for Mexican food’. As someone who had forgotten just how good dining in an affordable Mexican restaurant can be, it’s hard to argue with that.
