The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
Bustling, especially on a Saturday night, with a steady flow of diners making their tasty way around Eight’s different open kitchens cooking a wide array of international flavours. Eight kitchens and one culinary journey is the restaurant’s tagline and they’re not kidding.
Service
Slightly formal at first – this is the Langham Hotel restaurant after all – but more relaxed and friendly at the table. On a busy Saturday night, drinks service was a bit tardy.
Drinks List
Tiger, Heineken and Amstel on tap with a good selection of wine and cocktails. Expect steep hotel prices though, with cocktails @ $18.50, and a topline glass of Chardonnay going for $19.
Highlights
With eight different kitchens serving everything from freshly grilled steaks to sashimi and Asian-style seafood, there’s plenty of choice. Highlights include gossamer-light naan bread and grilled prawns from the Indian-themed Spice Route kitchen, and juicy oysters from the Great Ocean Road seafood bar.
Most Suprising Dish
Plump homemade sausages from the Route 66 New York-style grill, and fresh tropical fruit dipped into the lush chocolate tower.
The Bottom Line
Eight at The Langham offers a modern take on the traditional buffet, with faithful and freshly-prepared versions of lots of different global tastes. Make sure you come with a big appetite.
A Reason To Return
A second opportunity to sample one of Auckland’s best butter chicken curries, grilled marinated octopus, and excellent Chinese dumplings at the yum cha station. Like we said, come along hungry.
