The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
Distressed bricks and polished concrete hint at an industrial ambience but the atmosphere is softened with carpet and cool beats. Unlike a few other places around town, there’s plenty of room between the tables so you’re not eavesdropping on other diners’ conversations. It’s an
izakaya restaurant, so look forward to sharing multiple small plates of exceptional Japanese food.
Service
Friendly with a perfect knowledge of the intricacies of the menu and wine list. Ebisu gets extra points for the perfect recommendation of our final dish.
Drinks List
Excellent cocktails, Stella Artois and Kirin ($9) on tap, and a well chosen winelist including Petaluma’s deliciously creamy South Australian Chardonnay ($16.50).
Highlights
The delicate perfection of the “Hotate to shiitake” (seared scallops with shiitake mushrooms and soy butter sauce - $17.50), and the large shelled Crystal Bay prawns grilled with chilli, lime and soy ($30).
Most Suprising Dish
The “Gyu no tataki” (seared Wakanui beef, garlic chips, spring onion and sansho pepper - $17.50). Caution: Must love garlic.
The Bottom Line
Contemporary take on a traditional izakaya restaurant that’s versatile enough to accommodate fine dining or a few after work drinks with a superior class of bar snack.
A Reason To Return
To sample the assorted goodies of one of Ebisu’s good value bento boxes ($20) for lunch.
