paid a hungover visit to Devonport Stone Oven for a sunday morning tightner - their big breakfast is the way to go if you're feeling as rough as me! The treats on display at the Devonport Stone Oven also looked good but my eyes were bigger than my stomach.
called into devonport stone oven today before a meeting. good coffee and the custard danish was awesome! Run there if you can - that way you can overindulge with the Devonport stone ovens baked goodness!
Dropped into Stone Oven cafe in Devonport for a quick coffee and cake and all was good. The coffee was perfect (not over done as some cafes) and the raisin cake was spot on. Even managed to grab a table outside in the sun. Definitely recommended.
Ok, so the Stone Oven might not be the best cafe on the shore.....but it is one of the best kid friendly ones. We usually end up here at least twice a week for either coffee and croissants for the adults and fluffys and cookies for the kids. The brekkies have improved lately and they do decent eggs and the pancakes are good too. The staff have never been great, pretty rude and they never smile. On the other hand, they have a great kids area.
Lots of goodies to be had at the Devonport Stone Oven - just make sure you don't go there hungover cos the kids run rampant through the place...mind you, one of the 'cheese franks' could be the solution to that problem!
I bought some Russian bread here which was very good, although there was no salt in it at all and there should have been a little.
I ordered a club sandwich for lunch, it was a humongous portion but not really a sandwich but 1" thick slices of toast with a huge piece of avocado next to it. You couldn't really call it a club sandwich as you had to eat the components separately and the bread was the fluffy fall-apart kind not really appropriate for a club sandwich. People really like this place though as it's always crowded, so they must be doing something right - the young girls running the place don't have much awareness of customers or customer service.
I went to Devonport Stone Oven Bakery & Cafe on a Sunday in February 2008 because it was listed in my travel guide. What a mistake. The table behind me ordered after me but got their food first and picked at it with their cutlery. I couldn't believe it when they called the waitress over and told her she got their order wrong. She then picked up the plate that they had been playing with and plonked it down in front of me. Both the waitress and the supervisor refused to get me a fresh order and expected me to eat food that had been given to someone else first (and picked at with their cutlery). Disgusting. I intend to report this place to the Auckland Regional Public Health Service as they clearly have no idea about food hygiene or customer service. This place does not deserve to be listed in any travel guides.
My husband and I have been to the Devonport Stone Oven Bakery & Cafe once only. We saw waiters removing birds droppings from the outside chairs with a cloth, and using the same filthy one to wipe off the tables at the same time. We found that disgusting. Not impressed at all by their cleaning standards.
