Not a great start for my birthday dinner, my entrée was missed being written down and I only knew when my main arrived. I mentioned it and they stood around with my main not knowing what to do with it as it got colder. I said don’t worry I’ll just have the main and then order dessert. I think they have a lot of work to get the wait staff trained up properly. High fives in the kitchen, hardly warranted. A little bit of a Fawlty Towers operation really.

The lamb (my 2nd choice as the Beef cheek I was salivating over had run out) was good although cold, the tagine my friend got was just ok. The pizzas cold too.

For dessert the baklava was not authentic, pastry not buttery and light. Strange because the owners are meant to be Turkish. The baklava you can get at Stoddard Road they would have been better off buying to serve, its amazing. The chocolate fondant was however very good and the only dish for the table of 9 that actually was hot. You wouldn’t want to cook it a moment less though as it was very runny inside.

Devon on the Wharf (right on the wharf, where the ferry docks) has great décor but has a long way to go to get up to scratch of many other better establishments otherwise it won’t last long and will go with the tide.

I wish I could say something really good about this place but unfortunately I was lucky for my birthday to get spoilt and have great company and good Pinot Noir because otherwise it wouldn’t have been a great night.

Was really excited about the prospect of a decent bistro arriving in Devonport so have been keeping an eye on the build progress of Devon The Wharf for quite sometime - willing it to be exactly what Devonport had been missing. It's now been open for a few weeks and finally got the chance to visit the other night. Devon On The Wharf (as the name suggests) is located at the front of the Devonport Wharf - it does take in the setting somewhat but the views out across Auckland and the water are a bit impeded by the design restrictions. Staff extremely friendly from the outset - it was a busy night but from what I saw, the staff carried themselves really well - nothing looked too much of an effort which is pretty extraordinary given it's only been around for a relatively short time.Food is Turkish - think mezze, harissa, grilled haloumi etc with a strong focus on seafood. That said - there's actually a wider variety especially for kids to choose from. Our choice of the mezze platter and a few small plates (chickpea saute, calamari, cauliflower fritters) was a little underwhelming truth be told - bland flavours that didn't really inspire. On the upside, the smashed meringue dessert more than made up for it - Devon On The Wharf certainly warrants a few more visits especially as we head into long hot summer nights - we just might be steering more towards the main dishes as opposed to sharing plates.
