Is Deus Ex Machina the coolest space in town? I’m not a big motorcycle buff – I’m still trying to live down an impulsive purchase of a Belladonna scooter a few years back – but this spacious café/gallery/retro motorcycle showroom is pretty hard to beat. And forget the showy look-at-me ostentation of Big Boy Toys and Harley-riding lawyers and accountants. Deus Ex Machina mainlines cool as hell 1950s imagery straight from Jack Kerouac and the Beats, and mixes it up with hip streetwear, iconic music, and damn fine coffee.

Deus Ex Machina is definitely the most spacious place in town for a coffee. It needs to be to accommodate the collection of vintage and retro motorcycles, sofas and big tables just perfect for informal business meetings, and cool streetwear including T-shirts and jackets to die for. Other quirky touches include Gibson Les Paul guitars, and BMX bikes straight from your suburban adolescence. So far, so good then, with ambience and design. What’s the food and coffee like?

The menu is pretty small, with croissants, pastries partnering a concise array of well-priced mains like Scrambled Eggs with Bacon ($12.50). It’s definitely a place to linger with the expected selection of lifestyle magazines accompanied by unexpected goodies like 1960s issues of the South Island’s own ‘Twist Grip’ magazine, and the biography of Invercargill’s “Fastest Indian’ legend Burt Munro.

Deus Ex Machina promote themselves as the ‘House of Simple Pleasures’. We can only agree. Expect to spend at least an hour taking it all in, and don’t be too surprised if you discover the biker within.
