Deus Ex Machina Information

If you're in anywhere near Auckland you should check out the newly opened Shed 5 Cafe. Located in an old warehouse in the ex Courier Post site off Wellesley Street, the cafe forms part of the Deus Ex Machina showroom; part gallery, part retail and part cafe. The folks behind the space are passionate about all things motorcycle related, they build custom bikes on site, a process that you can watch in action over a coffee. The entire space has an raw, yet thoughtful design ethos to it that makes you want to don a helmet and leather pants and be part of the action.

I've been dragged here a few times, and it's always been awful.

As far as I can figure, the staff are hired on how "cool" they look, as opposed to whether they can do their job or not. The coffee is almost as bad as the service -which is appalling- and the whole place is filthy. And the food? The kitchen staff should be fired... they can't even poach eggs.

The motorbike side of things is cool, but the only reason this place hasn't gone under is the continued patronage of middle-aged men dragging their families there on the weekends so they can reminisce about their glory days.

If you're a poseur who cares more about how you look while you drink your coffee, rather than care that said coffee is burned, you'll probably love it. But if you like food you pay through the nose for to be edible, steer clear.

Went yesterday.
Well I have to agree with most of the posts. Really cool idea, cool atmosphere, cool place but service was below average and the menu is very limited.
The staff need a good kick in the bum.
Apart from that it is a must see but for a coffee only.

Walked in and were immediately impressed by the space, had a good feeling and was busy but not manic so so far so good.
Coffee was excellent, food pretty good - service was terrible. Waitress in a bad mood stomping around slowly glowering at customers. Guys behind the counter full of attitude and not at all willing to elaborate on what might be involved in the limited menu. We had kids and they seemed to be frowned upon. They forgot a beer we had ordered and our friends were missing 1 out of 2 meals, with no apologies whatsoever.
Great concept, good vibe, shame about the unprofessional staff.

I came to Deus Ex Machina cafe with my girlfriends today (Sunday) and had one of the worst experience at a cafe so far and my friends felt the same way.

When we came in about lunch time, there were already 30+ people in the cafe so we decided not to order food from the breakfast/lunch menu to avoid long waiting time. We instead ordered two almond croissants , one tea, one flat white and an affogato. We were told the coffee would take 15 minutes. After waiting for about 30 minutes, we were still sitting at an empty table with no food or drinks. Then a waitress arrived with two plates of bacon and eggs, placed it on the table next to us with a number and no one sitting on then walked off! Can she not see there was no one sitting there to eat the food she brought out? At this point I decided to go to the counter and check on our order, a staff assured me that our ticket was coming. 10 minutes later, no one looked at us or came to tell us about our order being delayed. This time my friend went to the counter and asked one more time, only to be told we were next on the list. During this whole period, the two bacon and eggs plates were still left at the table next to us with no customers!

The croissants finally arrived but no drinks to be seen so we asked one more time. The waitress came back a minute later with our drinks, slammed the tea on the table next to my friend and said 'Here's your tea!' while spilling it onto the table without apologizing.

After waiting for 40 minutes and receiving extremely poor service, the quality of the food and drinks was no longer important to us. When we asked to speak to the manager she turned out to be the one at the till taking orders and was too busy to realize what was going on. Even though she apologized profusely we will NOT be coming back here or recommending it to anyone!

Very, very cool cafe. Deus Ex Machina is quite hard to find but once you're there (and provided you can get a spot), the extra effort should be worth your while.
Even if you're not a biker or into anything mechanical, you can't help but feel inspired by the setting.
I for one will be heading back to Deus Ex Machina - definitely one of Auckland's more stylish cafes.

Sat 11 Sept: Arrived at 1pm, ordered at 1pm. Coffee came quickly then 40min before food arrived. They did inform us there would be a 20 minute wait for the food. Included in the order was two Pain au Chocolats. There were four under the glass display when we ordered. By the time we were served there was only one left! The three others were sold to people who just had coffee and a cake, after we ordered. Staff not engaged with customers at all. No concern expressed about the poor service they delivered.
Overall, "great venue but just have a coffee".

Couldn't even poach an egg. If the staff weren't so concerned with selling raffle tickets we might have been served quickly too. Very disappointing. Especially as we were here for a birthday. I would not eat here again.
