I loved the cute little old school authentic whench uniforms the waitresses wore, the painting of the Neuschwanstein castle on the wall was the talk of the night and how one of the guys in our group had actually been in it, also Mad King Ludvig on the other wall.

The mulled wine smelt awesome and was the drink of the night.

We had been warned about the size of the meals, so I went for the one portion which was huge so imagine what size my friends 2 portion size was like. Wiener schnitzel was pork, deep-fried with the resultant curled edge but I had chicken which was much more succulent. The potato salad was good but I made the mistake of having a creamy sauce also and was sick that night. Nothing had very much flavour and one friend said it was like tasteless Truck stop fair.

Don’t order dessert, they were decidedly bad. The filling in the apfelstrudel was strange, brown and nutty, the pastry was lacking its golden and crisp usual shell.

The restaurant was full for a cold Saturday night which is strange considering it was ordinary food, maybe it’s the beer and the big servings for the blokes that was the calling card, maybe there are lots of kiwi’s that are not real foodies.

Come hungry and leave full. That is the standard German restaurant mantra isn't it? If so, then Der Metz doesn't disappoint.

Colossal meals served in efficient time with massive steins of German beer to wash down the pork and bring on the heartburn.

Certainly not a place for a first date, second date, or any occasion with a lady that you intend on remaining in a relationship with. But as a beer swigging, meat eating, catch up with the boys its spot on.

Thats what we went to do, and thats what we did. 4 star.

I visited ‘Der Metz’ last Saturday as part of a big group. The service was friendly and efficient, the list of German/Austrian beers is great – however, the quality of the food is appalling.

Being Austrian myself I am embarrassed that this is how German/Austrian cuisine is represented in this part of the world. The portions are huge (almost repulsive) but lacking in every other way. I would much rather pay more for a smaller Schnitzel that is of higher quality, less salty and maybe pan fried? What about home made chips rather than package bought ones? Similar to the Schnitzel, the venison was tough, the Spaetzle dry and the sauce mediocre.

I am saddened to think this is how locals perceive our cuisine.

Great restaurant, good service, but be warned - the meals at Der Metz are HUGE! Definitely take an empty stomach, even one of the "light meals" on the menu would feed a grown man for a day. The full size meals are just that - full size and I mean full size. Excellent value for money and they do not skimp on the quality either. My partner had the chicken liver entree which we ended up sharing, and this was done absolutely perfectly (it often isn't elsewhere). The ambience is relaxing - and very German of course - with lots of beer steins on the walls etc. There was music but it was not obtrusively loud like some places. The wait staff were pleasant, efficient and very helpful. Der Metz is highly recommended!
